How to add the Group Policy Editor to Windows XP Home SP3

This Group Policy Editor is normally associated with the Professional version of the Operating System if you try to call it up from either a MMC snapin or from the run menu it will fail

You can use Doug Knox's Security Console to access several of the the functions however this is a poor mans solution to the problem you will need Microsofts own GPEditor for full functionality. If you want to easily edit the Local Security policy in XP Home is to use Doug Knox's Security Console v1.4.3 this costs $10 and is worth the money.

As you can see you can change 9 settings in the profile if you use RegFromApp from Nirsoft you will be able to see exactly what the console will change in the registry, you will have to select the Console process in the inspection menu

Installing the full Group Policy Editor from Microsoft

You can copy the gpedit.msc from a working copy of Windows XP Professional but the registry changes are not transferred automatically to the registry so errors can easily be made. If you can't manage to do all this I have created a batch file HERE to do it all for you all you need to is restart the PC then activate the Group Policy Editor as normal in XP Professional as shown above.

For those who just want a quick fix to set it without all the hassle download THIS little reg tweak from my Sky Drive.

If all this baffles you just too much then if you install the Windows TweakUI Powertoy version and click on the following you can get access this way from the policy tab as shown below

NOTES:

You may get an error Message: (appmgmts.dll) was loaded, but the DllRegister Server entry point was not found, file can't be registered I have Remarked this out on the batch file to stop this it seems to work without it anyway

Once you have added the Group Policy Editor then you can perform changes to you Local Computer Policy like reclaiming your 20% bandwidth reserved by Microsoft for Updating find out how to do this HERE on my tip
