Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

My clothes smell after I wash them.

You are washing always in cold water. Cold water will not kill bacteria.
Add one cup of vinegar to your wash BEFORE you start the machine.
Do it - your wash will NOT smell of vinegar. If the smell is very strong, start with 2 cups until all the laundry in the house has been done, then go back to one cup.

How To Clean Silk

Hand Wash the item. Gently move the silk fabric around in the soapy water. Rub stains with your fingers or a sponge to clean them. Pour the water out when finished washing your garment.
Rinse the silk garment in a vinegar solution. White vinegar removes soap, restores shine and softens silk. Fill the basin with cold rinse water. Add 1/4 c. (50 ml) white vinegar. Gently move the garment around in the water to thoroughly rinse it. Empty the basin again.
Rinse the item in cold water. Add cold water to the basin. Rinse the silk item a second time in a basin of fresh, cold water. Turn the garment over and around to ensure it is completely rinsed and free of soap.

Do not buy an LG Tromm front loader unless you want stinky, moldy clothes! The first few months, I LOVED this washer, but now I think the machine is possessed by smell demons! I've tried everything, but the solutions are only temporary! I hated the dryer, too, until a contractor said to ignore the setting for level of dryness and told me to just set it for an hour. That did the trick.

Stinky clothes are usually the result of washing in cold water. Cold water will NOT kill bacteria.
Add one cup of vinegar to the wash before you start the machine - try it.
The vinegar will kill the bacteria during the wash. Your wash will NOT smell of vinegar.
The dryer level of dryness on most auto dryers needs to be set three clicks toward + on most machines. LG is no different.

We've owned this washing machine for r+ years and it has been making our clothes smell awful--in fact, the machine itself smells awful. I've tried cleaning the basin with a bleach solution and I even ran a load of whites with some bleach to get it in the basin holes--the odor is still offensive. Since this machine uses a sensor to fill the basin, I can't get this washing machine basin clean. What can I do?

By my experience on Washer Machines, I would say that the problem are bacteria and mildew growing in the machine, not exactly in the drain or drum from the machine. Mildew can grow everywhere.

Oh, by the way, don't even think about bypassing any sensor from your machine. You don't want to wake up tomorrow and find a pool in your house, right?

To kill mildew and bacteria you may want to try some simple solutions:

* Keep the lid up between washes so that bacteria and mildew won't grow in it. Pour a bottle of vinegar in hot water and run it though the machine on a heavy load wash. When it is finished, leave the lid up.
* Didn't help? then pour a box of baking soda in it and running it with hot water cycle. Try running it without clothes.

... I mean, Run the washer machine without clothes inside. (Oh my gosh, I should go to bed, it's too late for giving advice on FixYa)

* If the smell continues Pour a big bottle of peroxide hydrogen (the 3% one from the drug store) and run a heavy load wash. Be sure not to use good clothes, it will get white. if that does not work, u may have a more serious problem. Perhaps the machine needs to receive maintenance and spray some peroxide hydrogen where the mildew is growing.

Also, You can try a commercial product for this kind of issue: http://www.smellywasher.com/

Some people says that it works when everything else fails.

Good luck!

have a philco ecotronic washing machine and the clothes smell a little after they have been washed. Do you know how to get rid of the smell on the clothes, is there a filter that needs changing? thank you

The problem is design. Not all of the water is getting out after each cycle and not all of the soap gets fully dissolved. After awhile, this mucky slime gets 1n the drain hoses, pump and filter - and they all smell musty - especially when the machine sits empty with the door closed between loads.

You need to clean the innards of the machine by doing a load without clothes on hottest setting (Whites) and depending whether the smell is bacterial (add 1 cup White Vinegar), fungal (add 1 Cup Bleach) or clogged filter (add 1cup Arm and Hammer with 1/4 cup SALT), this should do it

(Vinegar for Bacteria, Bleach for Fungus and Arm and Hammer with SALT to soften and loosen the slime)

Choose from above (not all 3 at once tho) and fill the machine with water and let run without clothes.

I would do the A&H with salt first, let cycle complete, then restart and add a cup of Vinegar, tel cycle finish then redo with 1 cup bleach

After treatment, leave the front door open after doing laundry from now on so it can thoroughly dry out and get air circulation. - Just open, not WIDE open ;-)

1994 Kenmore 90 series washer smells musty

If you do not use a hot water cycle every so often it can contribute to the build up of mold or mildew inside the washer drain lines, pump and tub.. This is a common problem for those that only use cold water cycles. The detergent alone sometimes is not enough to kill bacteria. You also need the heat from hot water. I would recommend that you run a cleaning cycle on the hottest setting you have about once per week as a preventive measure. Add some bleach to the water to kill any existing bacteria. NOTE: This may take a couple of wash loads before you notice a difference. If you wish to conserve by not wasting water and energy by running an empty wash tub every week, switch to washing your whites in hot water with a little bleach to keep them brighter. This will kill bacteria in the washer in the process. I hope this helps you.
