Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Projection TV Convergence

Your Projection TV has what appears to be ghosts in red, green and blue on it.
If the error is severe, this is a convergence problem. Convergence ICs are not too hard to change but require good soldering skills. There can be two or three ICs. There may be a blown solder-in fuse or two.
A service shop will charge $200 -$600 depending on service call, parts costs, labour, etc.
A slight error in one or two colours that just barely won't correct is an alignment issue. There are a lot of internal adjustments done by remote control. Digital adjustments are not forgiving. Have a pro do the adjustment.

Red and blue ghosting,

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Severe Ghost.

Mitsubishi has been known for having bad solder connections on their Convergence ICs from the factory. If you are tech savy, and don't mind doing some soldering, follow these instructions:

Unplug set, remove the back cover, find the convergence board (should be labeled, if not it is the long narrow board usually on top or side), find the convergence ICs on the heatsinks and resolder all the pins and ground. This should fix your problem.
