Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to fix a bad hard drive.

If you have a hard drive that crashed and can't live with the thought of starting over .. there is one last thing you can do to get your info from the disk!!

FREEZE IT... YES.. i said to put your comp. hard drive in the freezer...

First you need a ESD bag (antistatic bag) You are going to need a new hard drive anyways. When you get your new hard drive. it will come with a ESD bag over it..

Put the old hard drive in the bag...
Put the new drive in your comp.
Put the hard drive in the freezer over night..
24hours in the freezer = about 30mins run time... might get more time out of it if you freeze it longer but ... you will just have to test it

put the hard drive in and test it... if it works ( like it should ) you can use the old hard drive as a backup and keep freezing it to get the info off.

how to protect my lockbox data....my system got crashed.. need to flash my system.

Try a "live boot Linux" it is a operating system that boots from your optical drive or a usb, in live mode it can give you accessed to data on your hard drive, then you can send it to a usb drive to save it, there are many different distros configured to forensically find that info, thy are all free open source, once you boot, all the drive icon's will be on the desktop, just click & start locating the files, I will leave a few links bellow Thank You..

rattle noise

i dont think the hard drive is fixable at this point.the rattle noise you hear is usually the last indicator that your hard drive is going to crash for good. I have had the same problem with a couple of hard drives. the first time I lost everything. the second time I started hearing that noise from a hard drive ,I jumped into action and copied all I could before it finally quit for good. live and learn.

mu hard drive crashed!!! I got another one pluged it in and now i get press f1 or f2 for set up? I can get it to boot up even with the disk that I have. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Your problem is not very clear. If your main hard drive crashed with your operating system in then it depends on the reason for the crash.
Have you tried starting the machine and continually tapping f8 as it starts. If you do this you will get an alternative start menu. Try selecting last known good configuration and then see what happens.
If you have plugged a new hard drive actually into the machine then you need to get the machine to recognise it before you can do anything else. You need to go into BIOS - tap escape as the computer is booting and see if it has recognised it. You will possibly need to format it unless it has an operating system on it.
Your question is not too clear. If neither of my suggestions help then please repost with details of your operating system, whether the new hard drive has a system on it, and whether you plugged it in via USB or physically into the computer. If it is into the computer is it an IDE/ATA drive or a SATA drive. This will enable people to help you better.

windows won't start. The computer powers up but windows doesn't start. I thought it might be the hard drive, but it wasn't.

Perhaps it's booting something else, or preoccupied by whatever got loaded while you weren't running an antivirus? Try booting a LiveCD or an antivirus Live USB drive, and seeing if things seem normal from then?

sounds like hard disk faliure, suggest getting a new hard disk or perhaps attempt a system reinstall. Its not the fan but the hard disk.
