Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Lost the password to your BIOS?

Some BIOS manufacturers have "backdoor" passwords that can be used, even if you don't know or can't remember the BIOS password. Depending on your BIOS manufacturer, these are some of the backdoor reported passwords (there are case-sensitive):

AMI: A.M.I., AAAMMMIII, AMI?SW , AMI_SW, BIOS, CONDO, HEWITT RAND, LKWPETER, MI, PASSWORD.

AWARD: eight spaces; 01322222, 589589, 589721, 595595, 598598 , ALFAROME, ALLY, ALLy, aLLY, aLLy, aPAf, award, AWARD PW, AWARD SW, AWARD?SW, AWARD_PW, AWARD_SW, AWKWARD, awkward, BIOSTAR, CONCAT, CONDO, Condo, condo, d8on, djonet, HLT, J256, J262, j262, j322, j332, J64, KDD, LKWPETER, Lkwpeter, PINT, pint, SER, SKY_FOX, SYXZ, syxz, TTPTHA, ZAAAADA, ZAAADA, ZBAAACA, and ZJAAADC.

PHOENIX: BIOS, CMOS, phoenix, and PHOENIX.

VOBIS & IBM: merlin

Dell: Dell
Also, specific for DELL laptops and desktops, read the posting on how to locate the BIOS reset jumper and how to clear the BIOS password here:
http://www.topbits.com/reset-dell-bios-password.html

Biostar: Biostar
Compaq: Compaq
Enox: xo11nE
Epox; central
Freetech: Posterie
IWill: iwill
Jetway: spooml
Packard Bell: bell9
QDI: QDI
Siemens: SKY_FOX
SOYO: SY_MB
TMC: BIGO
Toshiba: Toshiba

If none of the backdoor passwords mentioned above worked, you can try the one below. They work for mostly all PC desktops and may or may not work with some laptops (in some laptops, using the procedure below may trigget a "hardware security lockup" and the laptop will not boot up afterwards; use at your own risk):

1) Shut down your computer or laptop (DO NOT HIBERNATE OR STANDBY)
2) Unplug your computer or laptop
3) If you have a laptop, also remove the battery or batteries
4) Open the bottom cover of your laptop or the side cover of your computer
5) Remove the BIOS battery (it's usually round, silver color and about 1" in diameter)
6) Wait at least 10 minutes
7) Replace the BIOS battery
8) Reinstall the cover
9) If you have a laptop, replace the battery
10) Replace the power cord and restart

The BIOS password should have been cleared

cannot boot laptop because of bios password

Easiest way to wipe clean the Bios password is as follows:
  • Perform a power drain by removing laptop battery pack and/or docking station power supply and hold power button down for 10 seconds
  • Locate the CMOS battery (usually under the smallest panel on the bottom of the laptop)
  • Remove CMOS battery for 20 minutes (20 is arbitrary can wait longer if you wish)
  • Replace CMOS battery and panel
  • Replace battery pack and/or replace to docking station
  • Power up
The Bios password should now be removed and you should be able to boot with no issues. Thank you for using Fixya and please remember to return to rate this answer.
