Tip & How-To about Cell Phones

How to enable auto-lock and BEIKS keyboard lock on BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.464

The recently released BlackBerry OS update version 5.0.0.464 has introduced a number of imprvements, but has also been reported to "strip" keyboard lock funtionality and break the ever-popular BEIKS Keyboard Lock application.

As it turns out, the functionality is not removed, but slightly modified: you now need to have a password set in the BlackBerry in order for the lock fumctionality to kick-in.

The password is set through the global Settings (or Options, depending on which BlackBerry you use) application, then in Keyboard.

I in particular find this new requirement rather confusing and even dubious. I hope they remove it in the next update.

Version 10.3.1 has been rolled out about the time you posted your question. I am guessing you have it by now. You did not mention your Carrier, but they typically control the release date of the new OS and their release date may be later than when BlackBerry releases it.

how do i reload my OS where can i get it

  1. Connect your smartphone to your computer.
  2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  3. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Update.
  4. To download the most recent version of your BlackBerry Device Software, click Get update.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • To keep a backup file of your smartphone data and settings, select the Back up your device data checkbox. This backup file is restored to your smartphone after the software reload finishes. If you don't back up your data, your smartphone data, settings, and email messages are deleted from your smartphone when you reload the software.
    • To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
    • If you want to receive an email when an updated version of the BlackBerry Device Software is available, select the Email me when new versions are available checkbox.
  6. Click Install update.

My battery is draining on my Blackberry Curve

The walk thru for updating your phone software is quite extensive (would be alot of typing). First you need to check your software version against your provider's most recent version. You find this by going to settings>options>about. When you update there are two main things you must have - 1.) the most recent version of Blackberry Desktop Manager and 2.) the most recent version of your device software, both are installed on your computer and should be available though the Blackberry website. I can provide you with KB article numbers from the Blackberry support site for the rest. Go to www.blackberry.com/support and search KB13427 and KB03621.

i want to update os to 4.6.0.292 but when i plug into desktop manager it says two updates 162 to upgrade and 167 to downgrade. i see the the 292 has an application 4.6.0.162. is this number what they refer to in the desktop manager. the 292 says package version. it is not mentoned in the manager. why don't they put the package versions number. let me know that they are refering to the application number.

One is the package version of the Handheld Software, and the other refers to the Application version that it places onto the device. Then there is also a Playform version. The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

It's just RIM's way of labeling their incremental releases.
