Tip & How-To about Google Android

Android and Resetting User Stored Words

Some of us can be pretty fast on those virtual keyboards. Of course, with that speed comes a few mistaps that might accidentally stored a misspelled word into the phone's built-in word list. And the next time you type in that word, the phone will put in the misspelled one. Here's how to clear the list of user-stored words.

Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Touch Input > Clear data

There is no way that I know of to edit the list. This works for the Sprint HTC Hero, and will probably work for other Android phones as well.

Enjoy!

Might I suggest alternatives - simpler, faster

The contenders Sumatra PDF. If you just want the ability to open PDFs and don't care about bells and whistles, Sumatra PDF is an excellent choice. The program's pretty much limited to straightforward PDF viewing, but it's lightning-fast and uses very few system resources.
Foxit Reader. Foxit Reader's not quite as fast or resource-friendly as Sumatra PDF, but it's still incredibly lightweight, and it packs a few features you won't find in Sumatra; namely, PDF-to-speech functionality, the ability to fill out fields and add text to PDFs, and optional integration with the DocuSign service.
Nitro PDF Reader. The final PDF reader of the bunch opens files slower than the other two options, but makes up for its somewhat pokey performance with a deep feature list-and it's still the equivalent of an Olympic sprinter compared to Adobe Reader's downright sluggish speeds. The free version of Nitro Reader can print (read: convert) virtually any document to a PDF, comes packed with collaboration, creation, and editing tools, and lets you embed your signature into any PDF. That's just the tip of the ice berg, and even better, Nitro PDF Reader dumps nary a watermark on your documents-a rarity amongst free PDF creation tools.

What is a good tool to define the speed of typing on a PC keyboard?

You can opt for the following typing speed test which is free, fast to pass and rather simple. I used to pass it several times and the result was pretty much the same which I guess means that it's valid.

how to adjust the speed dial of a18 size lever set thanks

Hi bonex_boat99,

If you have one of the more common style pocket watches like Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, etc., the adjustment of the spring tension on the balance wheel spring or "hairspring" is virtually the same for most models. It doesn't matter if the watch is a Crown (stem) set or lever-set. Open the back cover, and most watches will have a second dust cover protecting the movement.

On the main housing cover of the balance wheel and hairspring configuration is a small adjustment lever. Note the current position of the lever now, and move it slightly (very, very slightly) in the direction you need to correct for. Most movements will have "S" for Slow, and a "F" for Fast. Of course this is pretty obvious for most people. This adjustment will cause the balance wheel hairspring to become a little shorter or tighter for the faster adjustment, and therefore, cause the watch to speed up slightly. The reverse procedure will "lengthen" the spring, and slow the movement down.

Since you're apparently doing this yourself or for an associate, be careful with these adjustment, making certain to not slip and damage the wheel or spring. Run the watch for several hours, and compare the timing accuracy with your known amount of error, then make further adjusts if needed.

Of course, you still may wish to take it to a certified watchmaker or repairman for this service, especially if the watch is a heirloom or otherwise valuable piece.

Good luck with this procedure! Let me know if I can be of further service.

Thanks, Bill

virtual memory

The topic of Virtual Memory can be confusing for some folks, but I'll try to explain it as best I can (starting with the basics).
RAM, or, "Random Access Memory", exists in every computer. RAM are actually pieces of hardware (chips) and are used to store temporary data. The temporary data is then used for computation by the CPU (Central Processing Unit) at a later time.
So, for example: when you double click to view a movie file on your computer, it is first loaded into RAM (a chunk at a time), then moved to the CPU (Central Processing Unit) where it is processed and decoded, and eventually output to the screen and sound card. And voila, you have your movie.
RAM is also known as "Primary Memory". Comparatively, Virtual Memory (also known as Secondary Memory or Page Memory) is used in place of Primary Memory, but only if there is no Primary Memory available at the time.
Since Virtual Memory is stored on the hard drive, it is significantly slower than RAM; therefore, virtual memory usage should be avoided whenever possible. To compare: hard drive speeds are measured in Milliseconds (MS) where as RAM speeds are measured in Nanoseconds (NS). Generally speaking, the more RAM a computer has, the faster, or "more optimized" it is -- especially when switching between tasks.
If you are constantly getting the message that your system needs to increase Virtual Memory settings and you're not overworking the PC, I would suspect a memory leak. This is, of course, assuming that you haven't played with your virtual memory settings in Windows (it's best to leave it alone or restore to default).

FIX
look in Control Panel: System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory. I believe it's in a similar location in other versions of Windows.
