Tip & How-To about Televison & Video
Is your LCD TV powering on and playing sound, but displaying only a black screen even though your screen isn't cracked? If so, you may be in need of backlight repair.
There is a florescent tube backlight in most LCD TVs located right behind the screen itself. Its purpose is to light up the images displayed by the screen; without the backlight, these images are virtually invisible.
It is not always the florescent tube (or tubes) themselves that need to be replaced, but sometimes their inverter. An inverter is a special circuit that powers florescent lights by feeding them AC (alternating current) at a high frequency.
If either of these are damaged, it will cause the symptoms described above. But how do you know if you need to replace them?
Upon opening up your TV, the problems may be apparent-- and they may not. The tubes may be cracked, but even if they show no obvious damage, they could still be malfunctioning. The same goes for the inverter, usually there will be no signs even if they are damaged. Although sometimes there may be visible scorch marks on the inverter board. The point is that you may have to conduct a little trial and error to find out which is your problem.
But where to find replacements? A good source is ebay or any site individuals sell their items. You see, when people break their LCD screens, they want to try and recoup their losses a little. This means stripping down their TV and selling the parts. Just search your TV's make and model along with the words "inverter" or "backlight." You may also try the words "as is" or "for repair" to find entire broken TVs for sale that you can strip down yourself.
If you choose to dismantle your TV in any way please be sure to unplug it first, and just be careful in general; if you don't know what your doing, you coule make matters worse. Also remember that there are no guarantees. This solution has worked for me multiple times in the past, but your situation could be very different.
Well that's about it, I hope this helps people. I just joined this site today, and I've already given this exact advice to like six people so I figured it was a good subject to write my first tip thing about.
