Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

My USB 'Whatever' will not work

This not is not for USB flash drives, microphones, mice, anything that does NOT have an install disc at the time of purchase.

Most USB issues are caused by installing a USB device BEFORE you install the driver disk.
In all cases, if there is a driver disk, insert the disk first and wait for the install program to ask for the device. Then plug it in.

If you have done the faux pas above, all the installs in the world will not fix it. You MUST remove the USB driver. Use Device Manager. In XP, this is found by right clicking my computer and selecting properties. In properties select the hardware tab and choose 'Device Manager'.

Stop here. If you have no idea what I wrote, review 'Device Manager' on the Windows Website or ask a KNOWLEDGABLE friend for help. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123.

Now, select the USB device, while it is plugged in to the USB port, and right click. Select 'Uninstall'. Remove your USB device when device manager is done.

Close Device manager and all the other windows. Start your USB install from scratch, without the USB plugged in untill the install asks or completes.
I have ALWAYS had succesfull installs with this method.

software disc is too small, macbook pro will not accept the disc

Hi, if the Macbook can't read the Mini discs, you can copy the contents of the Mini Disc to any USB Flash Drive by inserting the Mini Disc in any Desktop Computer's CD/DVD Drive. After copying the Mini disc contents to USB Flash Drive you can install in the Macbook pro. var geo_Partner = '843689b9-ba30-459d-9c4b-876924715b22'; var geo_isCG = true;

I purchased a Cruzer USB 2.0 Flash Drive 4gb and when I inserted it into port for first time, I think it installed some kind of driver first and I was able to use it find. How ever when I when to my DVD RW Drive (E:) to retrieve data from a CD disc, it would not bring up any files on the disc. Did the Flash Driver driver disable the DVD drive? Thanks Wayne

Unless your computer or flash drive did something weird, the USB drive had nothing to do with the DVD drive issue. (There have been drives sold with malware do to issues at the manufacturer/distributor. These affect the registry so you might try rolling back to a previous configuration in the System Restore after you do a malware/antivirus scan either in Safe Mode or from a LiveCD (preferred). The advantage of the LiveCD is that the malware really can't protect itself since the boot sequence is fully independent of the usual OS.)

Most likely though your optical drive failed for some other reason. Check the device manager for any driver issues (Control Panel > Hardware or Computer > right click on the optical drive and choose Properties and then the Hardware Tab followed by clicking on the optical drive. Then click Properties and the Drivers tab.). If you can, try a disc cleaner to clean the lens. Also check that the cables are fully seated (both to the motherboard and the optical drive). Consider trying a new data cable.

With today's prices, it usually isn't worth repairing an optical drive. However the most common issue is the lens tracking and lens transport system.

I hope this helps.

Flash drive has a DVD ghost

It is "working as designed" for a 'U3' device.

A 'U3' device is _more_ than just an "ordinary" flash-drive.

You can install software onto a 'U3' device, i.e., a copy of Microsoft Office, and then you can take your data files _and_ your copy of the software _with_ you, and connect to any computer, and access your software and your files.
