Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Upgrade firmware on NETGEAR router. Many a times, it is required that you upgrade the firmware on your NETGEAR for it to function properly and be equipped with the latest updates and feature offered by NETGEAR. I have listed the specific steps which are required to upgrade firmware on most of the NETGEAR A. Open the router page using the following way: 1. Connect a computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports. 2. Open the browser(Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox). 3. Access the router, usually with http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com. 4. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the username and password is case sensitive. In case you have changed the password for router login then you need to use that one). B. Visit the following link to download the latest firmware. http://kb.netgear.com/app/ Type the model make of your NETGEAR router and it will show you the download page for that specific product. C. Please follow the steps to upload the firmware of the router: 1. Open the router page using the steps as mentioned under step A. 2. Under Maintenance, click router Upgrade. 3. Click Browse and locate the upgrade file. 4. Click Upload. 5. Wait for the router to reboot. 6. Click on 'Logout' (at the bottom of the list) from left menu. It is recommended that you reset and then reconfigure your router for the firmware to upload properly. NOTE: Please upgrade the firmware on a computer connected wired to your router. Upgrading firmware on a wireless computer may cause your router to malfunction and can lead your router to be in an unusable state. These steps will succesfully allow you to upgrade firmware on your NETGEAR router.

firmware version

Wireless routers contain built-in programmable logic called firmware. The firmware is embedded software that implements network and security protocols for that specific model of hardware device.Every wireless router ships with a tested version of firmware provided by the manufacturer. However, most routers are also designed to support a firmware upgrade process. This allows the manufacturer to provide enhancements to routers already sold. Manufacturers generally provide firmware upgrades as free downloads from their Web site.

Additionally, a few manufacturers (like Linksys) provide their firmware as open source code on the Internet. Programmers worldwide are free to modify and extend the code with new features for their routers. Several versions of this hacked firmware can be found on the Web, but the average homeowner should avoid these types of firmware.
The Firmware Update Process
You begin a firmware upgrade by downloading a binary file package from the manufacturer's Web site. After the package is set up properly on a PC, an administrator can launch the actual upgrade from the wireless router's administrative console. The router will stop functioning if the upgrade fails to complete. For this reason, manufacturers generally recommend an Ethernet cable be run from the router to the PC to ensure maximum stability during the update. Consult the router's product documentation for details.
Immediately after purchasing a router, check the firmware version to ensure it is the latest version. Firmware can be installed on a router at the factory several months before the router is sold.
Then, check the manufacturer's Web site occasionally over time for any new firmware upgrade postings. Each time a firmware upgrade is posted, the manufacturer will provide notes detailing the enhancements it provides. Feel free to skip an upgrade if the new version does not offer any interesting features. However, if a router is performing sluggishly, freezing unexpectedly or experiencing dropped connections, firmware upgrade often supplies a quick fix.

I tried a firmware upgrade to resolve an issue with the router dropping WiFi connections but now it doesn't work even after a factory reset

Wrong firmware. Never upgrade firmware unless recomended by the mfgr or the unit itself can upgrade automatically like most newer Netgear models.

Buy a new router, they are very inexpensive.

You may need to upgrade your Router Firmware. Try going to the Netgear site http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1297 and select your exact model. Version number is located on the sticker under the Router. Under the downloads section of your model, is a Firmware download. Download the latest version for installation. BE SURE that you connect your computer and router with a Network cable when upgrading the Firmware. DO NOT upgrade firmware over Wireless connection of you could fry the device. To login into the router console click http://192.168.0.1 and enter admin as the username, and password as the password. You will see an upgrade firmware section, point to the new Firmware file you have downloaded and follow the on screen prompts. You will need to setup your SSID and Encryption Password after the upgrade. Netgear Support will walk you through this these steps if you are uncomfortable performing them. Siemens SpeedStream 2614 Router

Updates for this model were probably discontinued some time ago. For basic routing functions, you don't really need to upgrade. If you want this router to provide some basic firewall functions to protect against hackers on the Internet, it would be best to upgrade to one of the inexpensive LinkSys, Netgear, or D-Link routers that have improved firewall capability.
