Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

Refrigerator Maintenance Tips

Keeping your refrigerator performance at its best is something that takes some thought and some time to do. Here are some things that will help your refrigerator to run like a new refrigerator for many years.

If you still have a very old manual defrost refrigerator, then make sure that you turn off the refrigerator and defrost it whenever more then ½” of ice builds up on the inside of the box.

If you have a self-defrosting refrigerator then you need to check that no frost is building up on the inside. If frost is evident, then you need to check to see why it is there. There is a problem with the defrost part of your fridge. Also check the drain pan that is usually under your refrigerator. It is a good idea to clean this once a year.

A good time to clean the drain pan is when you also clean the condenser coils. The coils are usually underneath the refrigerator. They can be cleaned by using compressed air to blow the dirt out or by using a vacuum to pull the dirt out.

Next check the door seals on your refrigerator. Clean your seals with warm soapy water and inspect them to make sure they are not torn, and that they seat tightly against the frame of the refrigerator. If the seals are leaking it will cause the refrigerator to run much more and possibly not even be able to cool properly.

For your refrigerators best performance you need to make sure that all of the proper cleaning and service is done at least once a year. This holds true for all size refrigerators. Cleaning and maintaining your refrigerator is easy to do if you do it regularly and do not let it go till the refrigerator does not work anymore.

everything in the freezer is melted and the refrigerator is not keeping things cold. i hear something like the motor running. is it the compressor?

It could possibly the fan motor your hear running. It sounds like the compressor has a problem. Either it has failed or the start device for the compressor has failed. Best off to call a certified Service Center such as Sears.
