Tip & How-To about Cell Phones

How to Improve Readability of Small Sites on the iPhone ?

As great as Mobile Safari is, there are times when a web site is formatted poorly, and it is just too difficult to read comfortably on the iPhone. Enter Readability, a free and easy to use bookmarket that will reformat any web site, making it much more enjoyable on your small screen. There are three simple options: Style, which include options like newspaper or eBook; Size, from extra small to extra large; Margin, extra narrow to extra large. After you specify your preferred reading format, add the bookmarklet to your bookmarks. The next time you're browsing a page you simply tap on your bookmarklet and the site is instantly reformatted to your preferred style.

Two continuous problems that I've had with Safari and seen posted everywhere (these aren't new)-- is there any plans to enable flash support for the mobile browser? I know that ship has probably sailed, but it's still frustrating to hit flash-heavy pages like movie and other entertainment official sites and be completely out to lunch. Another issue I have with mobile Safari is how squished up the page feels when I'm browsing, it's kind of ridiculous honestly. I'm a fan of how simple Apple's stuff is but these two issues make this mobile browser pretty frustrating.

Apple does not support flash on mobile browsers and never will. Flash is on it's way out the door and is no longer being developed by Adobe. If you want to browse a flash website on your iPad or iPhone, there are Alternative browsing apps you can buy on the app store to do it. They are not great and they are primary developed for playing Flash games on the web, not browsing the internet and viewing videos. Too many to list and no real recommendation so just search Flash web browser on the app store and try it out. The only other option I have done in the past was to remote into my home computer from my iPad and open a browser on it and controlled it via my iPad.

The small web page issue you mention has nothing to do with Apple or their products. The website is coded to reduce and change the website based on the browser viewing it. Most times you can select a link at the bottom to view the page in full desktop mode. so the page is converted to reduce and change on purpose because your screen is not big enough to view on a mobile device. Only way to really fix it is to select the option at the bottom of the page to view full desktop version of the page. Some websites are not coded to convert for mobile browsing and some are, so it all depends on the site you are at. Hope that explains it.

wikipedia on iPhone

wikipedia is already available for the iphone.. wikipanion is free and in the apps store now it formats the wiki pages to fit comfortably on the screen. iWik is another similar app and costs £0.59 there is at least one web-app (does not install but makes a link on your phone to wikipedia) from apple. Also don't forget you can just use the Safari Browser on your phone to go direct to the wikipedia site directly...

Apart from the normal download from app store that any of the apps require you do not need to download anything else nor prepare your phone in any way to use
