How to Replace a Defrost Timer in a refrigerator?

What is timer?
Timer is a small motorized unit that controls the function of defrosts cycle in a refrigerator. The defrost timer tells the refrigerator when to cool and when to defrost any ice frost collected on/in the evaporator coil.
Now the procedure to replace the timer is as follows:--
1) First of all for proper safety please unplug the unit from power outlet.
2) Then to locate the timer. It is located behind the refrigerator beside the compressor of the refrigerator. You will have to remove the metal kick plate on the bottom of the refrigerator. In older models refrigerator it is built into the icemaker unit.
3) In some models timer is fitted by the screws on the side wall of the refrigerator unit. so if screws are seen remove the screws holding the timer to the refrigerator wall.
4) Then slowly/carefully remove the timer out of the unit so you can disconnect the wiring from the connectors. For easy access of connectors try wiggling the connectors back and forth it will be disconnected.
5) Before removing the connectors please take a note of which connector was connected where and in what position.
6) Then take a new timer and plug the connectors in same position and at same spot in the new timer.
7) The refit the screws if you removed while removing the old defrost timer, replace the kick plate cover and plug in refrigerator and check out.

With the bottom kick panel removed, look for a defrost timer. It will look like a small motor and have a slotted fitting on the end of the shaft - usually you can turn it only one way. With the unit running, slowly rotate the timer shaft 'till the compressor stops. That's the beginning of the defrost cycle, which will end when the timer makes a full revolution. It's usually 12 or 24 hours between defrost cycles.
If the box is completely electronically controlled (electronic logic board), you may not find a mechanical defrost timer.

This control board oversees several internal conditions and regulates the activation of the defrost cycle. A faulty board can be the primary reason your refrigeration unit is not transitioning to the defrost cycle. Over time, the buildup of ice on the evaporator coil will prevent the refrigerator and freezer from maintaining proper internal temperature. It is advisable to first check the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat for continuity prior to replacing the defrost control board.

A possible cause for a refrigerator not defrosting, especially on more modern units, is the main control board. The main control board acts as a "brain" for the unit controlling the defrost cycle, compressor, and run time, and essentially acts in place of the defrost timer. The control board can be tested using an ohm meter for functionality and will need to be replaced if bad.

Another cause of your refrigerator not defrosting is a faulty defrost thermostat. A requirement for the defrost heater to activate to melt away frost on the evaporator coils is a functional defrost thermostat. The defrost thermostat senses the temperature of the evaporator coils and initiates the thawing process by activating the defrost heater. If the thermostat is faulty, it will not sense the lowering temperature of the coils and will not turn on the heater, resulting in an advanced frost build-up. The defrost thermostat can be checked for continuity by using an ohm meter; if there is no continuity the damaged part will need to be replaced.
  1. Defrost sensor with fuse
Another possible cause of a refrigerator that does not defrost properly is a defrost sensor with a fuse. If the defrost sensor fails, the fuse acts as a one-time-only fail safe for the sensor -- if the sensor does not shut off the defrost heater, the fuse will blow when the set temperature is reached. This safety precaution is to keep excessive harm from your unit by the heater and is a one-time use, resulting in the replacement of the entire defrost sensor.
Defrost drain problems
  1. Clogged or freezing defrost drain
If you are experiencing defrost drain issues, it is possibly due to a clogged or freezing drain that is blocking water flow to the bottom of the freezer. This will cause the defrost water to drain and drip down to the bottom of the freezer section. To correct this issue, thaw any ice or remove debris that could be causing the clogged drain or replace the drain heater.

my freezer keeps melting andre freezing. usually it is ocurring over night. when i get up in am everything is melted and blowing 29 degree air by 1 pm its blowing -11 degree air and refreezing. Response: Sounds like it is cycling on defrost mode too often.... you may have to replace the defrost timer. question again, if i turn the timer until it clicks and it cycle back on and is turn do you think it could still be the problem? Can the thermostat work intermmittently or is all or none?


Manually turning the defrost timer will not tell you if the timer is working, it only tells you the switching inside works, The defrost timer has a motor inside that turns it through it's cycles, this would be the part of the defrost timer that stops working.

But since the unit is freezing and thawing, The problem is more likely the defrost thermostat has came loose or is defective.

A DEFROST TIMER is a cycling device, it times the frequency and duration that the defrost heater coils melt the ice that builds up around the evaporator coils. If ice is allowed to build up, air will not be able to freely flow past them - resulting in reduced efficiency and sometimes a drastic warming of the cooling unit.

Most of the time, the defrost timer is in the cooling mode, allowing the compressor to activate when the thermostat signals it to. The remaining part of the cycle (usually less than 30 minutes)the timer is in defrost mode. In this mode, it signals the defrost heaters to melt the ice build up on the coils. This defrost action is limited by the defrost thermostat. If your DETROST TIMER go to bad, one symptom would be if your refrigerator is not cooling. Although there are many causes of this symptom, A stuck defrost timer can be one of them. The timer can get stuck in cooling (compressor activated) or defrost mode (defrost heaters activated) for usually two reasons:
- The timer motor can fail for one.
- The gears can also become locked up.

No matter what the reason is or which mode the defrost timer gets stuck in, the refrigerator can stop cooling. When the refrigerator is stuck in defrost mode, the compressor no longer comes on to cool the unit. If the timer gets stuck in cooling mode, the evaporator coils never get a chance to defrost, causing ice build-up to the point where there is a complete blockage of airflow past the coils.

The defrost timer can also cause the refrigerator to stop cooling due to failure of the internal switch which activates either the compressor or heater coils. Finally, when doing any repair on a refrigerator, check the condenser coils for dust buildup and clean accordingly.
