Tip & How-To about Audio Players & Recorders

How to change the load belt on a CD changer.

When the tray on your multidisc CD changer will not open/close properly, or at all, you probably need a new load belt. Unplug the unit and remove the cover. Generally this means taking all the screws around the perimeter of the back out and perhaps on some units, screws in the sides. If the cover is one piece over both sides and the top this would be the case. Every unit is different but it should be apparent if you study it a little bit.

Once the cover(s) are off and you can see the tray, with everything clear, plug the unit into AC and press the open button. When the tray has moved to the full out position, unplug the unit. This will allow you to get to the load belt on the load motor. You should see it now that the tray is not blocking the view. Remove the belt. It will probably be a square belt and not very long. If you do not have a belt guide you can approximate the length by laying it flat, using two pencils stretch it out, but do not stretch the belt. Only pull unit until the sides are paralell. Have someone measure the length, multiply by two and you have the length. You may want to add a little more to make up for the losses around the ends. You can find replacements at http://www.mcmelectronics.com or http://www.encompass.com . At encompass you could order a belt based on the model number. At mcm you would need the length.

When you have the new belt install it and reassemble the unit. This would be a good time to clean the laser lense. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4119308-clean_lense_cd_or_dvd_player which explains in detail how to do this and where to get any materials you would need.

Your unit should now work like a new one.

CD tray won't open or close on onkyo dx-c606 cd changer.

Yes! it sounds very likely that a small loading belt has stretched, or the loading motor is not working, this is not an easy repair because the gears are timed and synced to work together, if the unit has a loading belt pull tray all the way out and look in the empty tray, may be visable! if you can remove it without taking it apart all the better, have a Tv repair shop size up the belt for replacement.

CD-R drawer won't open. CD is in drawer.

there are different reasons for stuck up disk tray

1. load belt is worn out already
2. driving gear for mechanical loading disc tray has broken teeth.
3. cd got stuck up between the loading disc tray and the plate holder.

You will need unplug your device first and then unscrew the cover of your unit and find it yourself to know what causes it not to open.

once the cover is out, the mechanical loading disc tray will be exposed.
1. remove the stuck cd
2. plug the unit and turn on, to get access the belt, wait for the disc tray to move to the pull out position, then unplug your device.
3. plug the unit and turn on, if the disc tray do not move, use your finger to move the tray and see which gear is broken.

belts are available from this site. just have to measure the correct diameter of the belt in your unit

My RCA Stereo system 5 disc cd drawer keeps opening. When I put a cd in it, the unit opens and keeps opening. It only stays closed when I turn off the unit and manually push it closed. What could be causing this problem?

These units are actually nice units. There is a "loading belt" inside that controls the tray movement as well as the final "load" of the mechism into the play position. If the load does not complete, the unit will "eject" or open up. This is most often cured by replacing the loading belt. This is a common problem with any rubber component. As it ages, it gets a little slippery and thus will not have the grip to complete the loading sequence. The belt for this will run about $5.

Cd tray wont close, cds wont play

Sounds like you probably have a stretched belt on the load motor. Unplug the unit and remove the case which will expose the load motor. Plug in and turn on and press tray in button. You should hear the motor run and if you can see the belt you should see it slipping. Some belts are easy to change, and some are next to impossible. If you have to disassemble anything be sure that you note the position of everything as the timing of the tray, door, laser and most items in the unit is very critical. Let me know if you need more help.
