Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to replace an inverter board in a laptop screen.

Your laptop has no display but when you hook up an external monitor the picture is fine on it. If this is true then more than likely you have a bad inverter board. They are available at http://www.impactcomputer.com . They are not that expensive. You could also have a bad LCD screen but my experience has been that most of the time the inverters go bad. One way to tell is to shine a bright light on the LCD screen. At the right angle you should be able to see what should be on it. If you see a display then you probably have a bad inverter board. That doesn't rule out a bad back light but on most new computers you have to replace the display to replace the backlight so it would be a mute issue since the cost would be as much as a new unit.

To replace the inverter board you will have to remove the bezel around the LCD screen. Usually the bezel has a few screws hidden under plastic dots or rubber cushions. Remove any you see and then pry the bezel off. The inverter board should be visible at the bottom of the screen and may be held in with two screws. Remove and replace the inverter, reassemble the unit and you should be back in business.

The machine is a Gateway NV53 laptop. The display is showing a reddish background with grey to black horizontal bars. Is it the inverter?

No that will be the screen itself. If the inverter is bad you will see a very faint picture.
Hook the laptop to an external monitor, if the picture is fine it is definitely the screen itself. If it still experiencing display problems then it will be the motherboard.

Screen problems

The next time your laptop screen is messing up, try to hook the laptop up to an external monitor. If the picture is bad on the monitor too, you have a laptop video card issue. If the picture is good on the external monitor, then you have a problem with your laptop LCD/ inverter.
