Tip & How-To about Bosch PowerStar AE125 AE125 Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater...

How does circuit breaker work?

In the circuit breaker there are two electrodes with space some distance.
There are many types of circuit breaker air blast, oil C.B, vacuum C.B etc.
Most probably oil circuit breaker is used. In the OCB, the transformer oil fill.
And these electrodes are submerge.
Now when the electricity flows from one terminal to another terminal, the arc is developed between terminals end inside the circuit breaker. This arc is quenched by transformer oil.And the electricity flows without any fault.

Plugged in ana exxternal water heater and none of the breakers flipped but now our plugg ins are not working what coud be the problem

There may be a ground fault interrupter duplex plug in unit that has tripped. They are often placed as the first plug in in a circuit and therefore they protect plug ins "downstream" from the breaker box. It may be located some distance away from your recognized problem plug in. Some of them still work themselves, but still shut off power beyond. There should be a reset button on the unit.

The wire in my house for an elec. garage heater is 14 gauge wire with a 15 amp breaker. I assume i need at least 10 gauge wire with 20 amp .The heater is 20.9 amps and 3000-5000 watts, with 17500 BTUs

Curt, a 20 amp breaker will blow if you pull 10.9 amps from it. I suggest having a licensed electrician do your wiring. Likely, you need a permit anyway.

I would like to know the electrical requirements.( voltage and amperage) Does it plug in or is it hard wired? If the power goes out is the hot water also out? thankyou

Are you asking about tankless gas or tankless electric?

You posted under Tankless gas water heater: gas type tankless plugs into standard 120Volt household outlet to power circuit board. You need larger gas line than used for tank-type gas water heater.

If you are asking about volt and amp draw of Tankless electric, then that depends on specific model number.
For example, if each tankless element draws 3500Watts, and unit has 3 elements, you will need 3 additional 20 amp 240Volt circuit breakers. Volts x amps = watts. 3500 watts divided by 240Volts = 14.58 amps. At full blast, this unit would draw 43.75 amps and will cost more to operate yearly than tank-type electric water heater. If unit has 4500 watts elements, then it will draw 56 amps at full blast, and use a good percentage of household power.

Tankless water heaters have no hot water in power outage. This is true for gas and electric models.

OUR WATER HEATER IS BLOWING FUSES ..

1) Turn off power before touching water heater that is shorting or wet or was flooded.
2) Circuit breakers & fuses blow because of heat. A short will cause heat. Tighten screws on terminals inside box, listen for crackling sound/burning smell from loose-fitting parts.
3) Easy test for circuit breakers: move water heater wires to another same-size breaker. If same-size does not blow, then problem is breaker.
4) A short between fuse box and water heater could be gnawed electrical wire. Inspect wire.
5) Wires have size markings. 5500 watt water heater needs #10 wire. 4500 watt water heater needs #10 wire but can work with smaller #12 if distance is not long. See label on side of heater for wattage, voltage, etc. Element wattage is water heater wattage even with 2 elements.

6) Short inside water heater can be elements or thermostat. Open covers and inspect parts for burning. Screws should be very tight against copper wire. Sediment could fill bottom of water heater cause lower element to short.
