Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Sony projection KDF42WE655

If you have one of these models and have an issue where the lamp door or the surrounding area is warping and or cracking, you may qualify for a free repair for these TV's. The optics block failure (blue pattern, stars) is usually caused by high heat as well so it too maybe covered. I have provided the link from the Sony website.

replaced lamp in sony sxrd 50 inch rear projection and getting 3 red blinks for lamp door not closed ..have taken off and put on several times with same results..any suggestions?

Sony Lamp issueI see this so much that I am going to compose and save this answer:

3 blinks (it is in the owner manual) is "Lamp door not properlyclosed".

What is really wrong is if you remove the door and look edgewise it will likely be warped from the heat from the lamp.

1. On most of these but not all SONY knows of this and offers on many models to repair or replace the set for free---somemodels the heat also warps the area thelamp inserts in.

2. If you look at the back of the door there is a small plastic peg--it whendoor is installed engages a lever (small and designed to prevent the set frombeing used if door is open).

3. The way to prove if door is the problem is to with something not metalengage and hold the lever where the peg goes (you will have door off and alsothe large front plate giving access to lamp) and turning set on.

IF SET COMES ON AND WORKS DO NOT LOOK AT THE LIGHT FROM THE LAMP as it candamage your vision.

DO NOT OPERATE SET FOR A PROLONGED TIME WITH DOOR REMOVED OR THE FRONT PLATE(that covers access to lamp) attached as the heat with door removed can damagethe outer plate.

4. If set works then you have a few choices=Google the model number with"lamp door" or order it from Sony and replace it.

Please feel free to comment here (make a comment button) if you have questionsor concerns and it is important to me to know if this helped you or not

starting to get some blu coloring around bottom left corner of screen.Did everything SOny "experts" suggested.Wondering if it bulb going out ?

It is not the lamp causing the issue at all. The issue is the light engine or sometimes called the optical block is failing and the blue will take over more of the screen as time goes on. The optic block is not a do it yourself type of repair. The one thing I would suggest is to look closely at your lamp door and the area surrounding it for warping and or cracking. Either one of those issues means that Sony will cover those repairs and possibly the optics block replacement. Heat damage is what usually causes the optic block failures as well. I have included a link directly from the Sony support website that addresses your model specifically. Make sure you inspect the lamp door and surrounding area as you may get a repair from Sony.

lamp light is blinking on my sony lcd projection tv . how do I replace the lamp myself.

You have to remove the lower panel on your TV. You will have access to the lamp door at that time. Once that is removed the lamp is sitting behind the lamp door. Also once you do get the lower panel removed verify that there is no warping of the lamp door or surrounding area. If there is I have provided a link from the Sony website that indicates they will replace the warped parts and associated issues that caused the warping. The lamp however is NOT covered by this extension. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks....

Turns off periodically, does the 6 red light flash thing. I can bring it back but only for a while.

The 6 flash error indicates a power supply issue. One of the things that normally happen with this model is the lamp cooling fan becomes clogged with so much dirt and dust it looses its efficiency. If that happens the lamp are becomes warped and distorted also causing the lamp door to warp. Look to see if your lamp door is warped as you may qualify for a repair in the following bulletin on the Sony website. If the door is warped do not use the set anymore until you follow through by contacting Sony so it doesn't do any further damage. Here is the link to the Sony bulletin.

Does the lamp needs programing after replacement.

No programming is required - the set should come on if the lamp is good and installed correctly. You may have another problem (ballast) or a defective lamp. Was the old lamp visibly bad?
