Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

I get cartridge error on my HP printer.

Hi.

To start test using a different cartridge set. The problem may have been caused by defective cartridges.

Also reinstall the driver software, even if it is rather unlikely that this is a software issue, that is a necessary step in troubleshooting.

After that try powercycling the printer, and do the following cartridge maintenance:

  1. Check for fragments of paper stuck inside the printer or on the printer feeding tray.
  2. Remove printer cartridges.the metal plate contact in the ink carriage using isopropyl alcohol and cotton.
  3. Clean
  4. Put back printer cartridges.
  5. Turn off printer.
  6. Disconnect printer power cable.
  7. Restart computer.
  8. Empty printer cue on computer.
  9. Connect back and start the printer.

My printer HP Officejet J4580 All in one, does not print, It reports "Entering sleep mode". Put new ink cartriges in, paper not jammed and no lights flashing and I printed a test page on the printer to check' old cartriges. Advise.

Hi.

Try the following in order:

Disconnect printer power cord.
Turn off computer.
Disconnect computer power cord. (if laptop also remove battery)
Restart first computer than printer.
(this may look stupid, but it drains power that can jam USB ports and cause malfunction).

Clean the metal plate contacts in the ink carriage using cotton and isopropyl alcohol or cleaning solution.

Try turning off printer and performing a new cartridge installation. Use the HP software cartridge replacement procedure, do not simply swap cartridges.

Disconnect printer USB, reinstall printer software, connect printer back when prompted by setup wizard. Updated software for this model available at Software & Driver Downloads.

If you have spare cartridges, test them, the problem may be caused by a defective cartridge chip. Non original or refurbished cartridges commonly cause similar problems.

Hi Glenda

Trying cleaning the contacts on the cartridge and clean the contacts on the printer use a dry tint paper towel to clean the contacts. Then try to reinstall the cartridge using the software. Try to print the self test. If failed try another cartridge if you dont get any error then the cartridge might be defective

Excessive Yellow ink use

The printer software should have an option for head cleaning & alignment. Make sure to run these maintenance options and see the results. You may need to re-run the tests.

Sometimes generic inks can cause a problem, so after cleaning, try to use an oem cartridge (same company as your printer) and observe the results.
