Tip & How-To about Philips DivX DVD Player
VirtualDub by Avery Lee latest build is v1.9.8 on 24th December 2009 is now faster since being compiled with Visual Studio 2005 for x86 this is the original and the best there are now many filters available namely Donald Graft's filters and fccHandler's stuff that make this free AVI program the best of its kind....
VirtualDub deals with Audio tracks by Spliting across interleaves where as the VirtualDubMod version Aligns with Interleaves which supposedly gives better playback sync of the resultant AVI
VirtualDubMob developed by Belagabor; Cyrius; Pulco-Citron; Stone-D and Stream based on VirutalDub v1.5.10 the Modified latest build v22.214.171.124-b2550 on the 25th December 2007 however most bundles like AVI Recomp v1.5.0 still have the v126.96.36.199-b2542 from the 21st February 2006, and AGK v2.55 still has the v188.8.131.52-b2178 from October 4th 2003 (three years earlier). You can install the latest version over these ones in the respective bundle folders there is no point having two versions of the same application on your PC.
It was created in an attempt to merge all the different versions of VirtualDub that were out there NanDub; VirtualDubMP3 Freeze; VirtualDub-MPEG2 and so on that sprung up as a result of Avery Lee posting the source code at the Doom9 forums so these Guys set out to give you all under one roof and succeeded the modified version is used in these two excellent bundles.
It will sometimes remind you that the Matroska Support is outdated you could use AVI-Mux Gui OR MKVToolnix it is worth noting the the new DivX Plus v8.0 Bundle that includes the latest v6.9.2 of the DivX Codec it does a great job handling amazing quality H.264 video with extra features like multiple audio tracks, subtitle tracks, and multiple videos in a single file. That’s why its been chosen as the basis for the DivX Plus HD format, anyway Alex Noe's program is well worth a look though as well
AutoGordianKnot v2.55 bundled with VirtualDubMod v184.108.40.206b2178; AVISynth v2.5.8 and XViD v1.2.1 the good thing is that you CAN encode into DivX v6.9.1 if you have a licenced copy installed, if you have newer versions installed just deselect them if required.
AVI Recomp v1.5.0 bundled with VirtualDubMod v220.127.116.11b2542 (sadly this has only XViD support at this time) so is unable to re-encode into the latest DivX Pro v6.9.1 codec DX50
One of the main differences between the two is that with VirtualDubMod added Matroska and OGM support and changed the way audio tracks are added and removed although it will tell you that MKV support is old and to use AVI Demux GUI to handle this codec.
It also handles AVISynth in a much better way the the Avery Lee original. AviSynth is a powerful tool for video post-production. It provides ways of editing and processing videos. AviSynth also works as a frameserver, providing instant editing without the need for temporary files. With this script-based video processor: you can turn, mix, twist, deinterlace, filter, resize, convert, in short do whatever you want to video and sound streams, then either direct those to a video treatment software or create a file.
One of its main features is the ability to add custom filters, and there are a truckload of them: intelligent deinterlacing, video cleanup and restoration, etc the latest version v2.6.0 alpha2 is available HERE
The main drawback is the lack of a GUI but when you work out how to script it's a dream, it is also worth noting that VirtualDubMod has a sophisticated AvisynthScript Editor that you can use to edit and see the changes in youravisynth scripts instantly.
When you load a .avs file into VirtualDubMod you can go to the Toolsmenu and choose Script Editor (or get there the quick way bypressing Ctrl-E) To Illustrate this, open the 'Colorbars' avsfile with VirtualDubMod - it is located in 'ProgramFiles/AMVapp/Example Scripts' then press Ctrl-E.
