Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

Staying in hot water

With water rates on the rise, it is costly letting water run at a remote hot water faucet. It makes more sense than ever to insulate exposed hot water pipes in the basement with the foam insulation that's split lengthwise.

As an added benefit, freezing pipes can be avoided during power outages. The hot water pipes freeze sooner than the cold water ones because the freezing point of heated water is closer to 32*F than the freezing point of cold water. Cold water has a depressed freezing point due to dissolved minerals from municipal water treatments. Water that's been heated has fewer contaminants, hence less freezing point depression!

Sounds as if you have air in the pipes.
To solve this you will need a piece of hose that will fit over the ends of your hot and cold faucets in the kitchen (or other lowest faucets in the house) - fix it on tightly with hose clips and open both faucets fully. Wait 5 minutes or so before turning off hot water faucet first.
If that hasn't cleared it repeat the process but after 5 minutes turn on your shower faucet and see if it splutters as the air is forced out. You may have to do this with other faucets in the house too. Close each one off once the water runs evenly without air in it.
If that doesn't work you will need to drain your hot water system down completely. Turn off water supply at the hot water cylinder (or rising main if you have a tank-less system) and open all faucets until water stops flowing. Close each faucet about 2/3rds then turn on water supply again. Wait for each faucet to get a slow but steady flow. Going round each faucet in turn gradually open each on a little bit more until all are running fast and even and all the air has spurted out. Now go round each faucet in turn closing each one down a bit at a time until they are only dribbling a small amount. Turn all faucets off.

Cartridge removal is a simple matter of exposing and pulling out the old cartridge. Before getting started, turn off both water valves underneath the sink and allow the water to run until the line is clear. Using a screwdriver, gently pry off the cap on the lever of the faucet handle to expose the cartridge. Remove the U-shaped retaining clip that holds the cartridge in place and pull the cartridge out. If dirt or residue makes removal difficult, use a Moen cartridge puller to assist you. A cartridge puller fits over the cartridge and gives you greater pulling power.

Soak the dirty cartridge in vinegar for four hours and replace.

If cleaning the cartridge does not work, call the Moen Helpline at 1-800-465-6636 or Customer Service at 1-800-465-6130 to order a free replacement. Locate the part number on the cover page of your instruction manual. If you no longer have the manual, look on the underside of the spout.

OK Lag the Pipes, you can get insulation that comes in two halves that goes around the pipes and uses "Ties" to hold the sides together. Or you could lag it with Hessian wrap, Anything you can wrap around and "Lag" the pipes with will be better than nothing.
