Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet
This is a tip explaining exactly what steps you should follow to increase your wifi signal when using a USB wireless adapter. I did this myself, and can honestly say, IT WORKS!!!
Firstly, you need to have the following:
* USB wireless adapter
* Aluminium foil
* Masking tape
* USB extension cable
* Aluminium mesh
* Glue stick
Now, after you have gathered all the components you need, we can start constructing our booster. Also, you need to have your adapter installed.
Step 1:
Ok, firstly you need to take the aluminium mesh you have, i use the kind which is used to cover a plate. It works great, and the bigger you have, the better the boost. You need to make a hole in the mesh at the center, which is the shape of your dongle(USB adapter). Do not make it to big, because your dongle needs to fit snug in the hole. I used regular scissors to make the hole.
Step 2:
The next step will be to cover the mesh with regular paper glue, to ensure that the foil stick to the mesh. You need to be quick when you do this, because the foil needs to be applied before the glue dries.
Step 3:
Now, you need to apply the foil. Lay out the inside and outside with the foil. Try to get it as smooth as possible. I use regular masking tape to tape the overlapping pieces together. You will see when you need to use the tape. Apply as needed.
Step 4:
Now, you need to place the dongle in the whole in the mesh, and see if it still fits properly. If it does, you can plug in the dongle via the USB extension cable.
Step 5:
Just position your construction in the direction of the access point or router to which you connect. This might not look very neat, but it really gets the job done.
I hope you can find this helpful. Please rate accordingly.
Kind regards

USB wifi adapter defaults to its best setting so there is nothing you can do to make it pick up signals better.
You might be able to increase your routers broadcast range if the router belongs to you.
If you are using a laptop in a public place (like an coffee shop or an airport or something) the best thing you can do is move around and get closer to the router, they have decent range so you shouldn't have to move very far.
The instruction manual should have tips on boosting range.
