Saving Data After A Crashed Windows On Laptops

I have already given my way of reinstalling Windows on a PC/laptop in Crashed Windows : No Problem This piece has the laptop in mind where one can not install Windows in a different directory/folder.
On a laptop where you either have the OS on a CD/DVD or on a hidden partition on the HDD you can not do anything but to follow my suggestion given here. Go to the following link and download Knoppix from there on a different computer. It would be in the form of an ISO file. Burn this ISO file to a CD and reboot the laptop that has the problem. Once booted with Knoppix, you can mount the Windows NTFS and FAT drives/partitions. After that you can copy all your data to a CD. That done will enable you to reinstall the Windows from the original CDs that came with the laptop or from the hidden partition.

old machine, trying to rehab for daughter. Turn on, seet Toshiba screen, then see "Disk read error, cntrl+alt+del to reboot"

You have one of two problems. Either your operating system crashed and you will need to get windows reinstalled on the computer or your hard drive crashed.
If the hard drive crashed you will need to replace the hard drive first and then also reinstall windows.
In both cases it is needed to reinstall windows.
This is probably something a computer technician should take care of.

Sorry Sir, bbut I'm unable to reset my keypass while I've given my code. I'm stuck!

There are two places to give the password. The BIOS and the Windows OS. You have not specified where you ave the password.
If in the BIOS then turn the laptop upside down and unscrew the plates one by one till you see a button cell. Remove the cell and replace it after a minute or so. Your settings of the BIOS will be reset to Factory Defaults.
If, in Windows OS then you will have to reinstall Windows. Follow the procedure in the links below to under stand the working of Windows and reinstall without loosing your precious data.
Also stop with the passwords as we tend to forget them sooner or later.

When reinstalling XP, install in a directory other than WINDOWS. Your My Documents will be safe, unless you have already overwritten it. Other data should be safe.DO NOT FORMAT THE DISK as the installation suggests.
