click start control panel sounds and audio devices select advanced there might be a tick in the mute box untick it or select audio from the microphone drop down list make sure you have the right one selected and in the volume box make sure the microphone box has a tick in it or select the voice tab and make sure that you have the right media selected also select volume make sure the box for microphone has a tick in it

click start control panel sounds and audio devices you can adjust the volume there also select speaker volume you can make adjustments there you can also tick in the box place icon in taskbar

    problem with compaq presario speaker

Usually the driver for the sound system got a little screwed up.

According to the documentation; this is what they recommend, however, do not flip out if you have already tried this. Go past this section and I will tell another approach.

    Checking your audio functions
To check the system sound on your computer, follow these steps:
    1. Select Start > Control Panel.
    2. Click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices.
    3. When the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window opens, click the Sounds tab. Under
Program events, select any sound event, such as a beep or alarm, and click the test button.
You should hear sound through the speakers or through connected headphones.
To check the record functions of the computer, follow these steps:
    1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder.
    2. Click the Record button and speak into the microphone. Save the file to your desktop.
    3. Open Windows Media Player and play back the sound.
NOTE: For best results when recording, speak directly into the microphone and record sound in a
    setting free of background noise.
▲ To confirm or change the audio settings on your computer, right-click the Sound icon on the
taskbar, or select Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices.

Now, that is the HP way. And I suggest you do that.

Another way would be to find the installation disk. And put it in your drive, then got to Start, Control Panel, System, and when that pops up go to Hardware, and then pick the Device Manager.

Delete the Sound section. Windows will then wander around a bit, but will then try to reinstall them. When it does (and it will ask for the A drive usually) hit browse and point it to whatever drive you have put the installation driver disk in.

    Good Luck,
