Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Xbox 360 and ps3

WITH PS3 AND XBOX 360 ALWAYS ADD AN EXTRA COOLING FAN AS THE FAN INSIDE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH.. THATS WHY MOST XBOX AND PLAY STATIONS SUFFER FROM YLOD AND RED LIGHT OF DEATH

I have a 60 gig. When I turn it on the light goes from stand by red to green, then to a yellow and then to finally a flashing red.

Sadly it the YLOD its the ps3 over heating it a similar problem to the xbox 360 with the 3 red lights

Its normally down to the CPU or GPU over heating

If you have a warranty then that's the way to go if its out of warranty then you can either call sony around £99.00 plus vat they will tend to send you a referb, worth calling them first as some times they will honor the warranty even if it out by a few months

Or you can send it to a local repair normally about £65.00 - £75.00 normally comes with a 4 - 6 month warrenty they will tend to recommend an extra fan installed as well as the fix

You can try the fix your self there is some information on you tube just look up PS3 YLOD but beware if you have no knowledge you can make it worse

Hope this is of some help

playstation 3 turns green then yellow then red

The problem is known as a YLOD on the PS3 or Yellow Light of Death. Your PS3 is most probably a 60gb model as they are mostly known for this issue. The PS3 is fitted with a very good cooling system. Unfortunately some of the 60gb models still overheats (either the GPU or CPU). This causes the YLOD and is very similar to the XBox' s Red Ring of Death.

The best is to return the PS3 if still under guarantee. You can attempt to repair it yourself at own risk. There are no statistics on how long the fix lasts. Most of the YLOD consoles I repaired myself are still holding out and it seems the fix is more permanent than the Xbox 360 fix. Here is a link to the guide that must be followed and it works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU) The other parts in the series you will find on the same page. There are 7 parts

After the fix a couple of things can be done to prevent future overheating:
Do not keep the PS3 in a confined space.
Keep it away from dust.
To enhance airflow, remove the cover over the HDD when switching it on.
Switch it off when not playing.

help?

sounds like your cooling fan is not working... replace fan inside or place a fan blowing on back of unit for temporary use only
