Do it yourself Mitsubishi PIP module BYPASS

This applies to most Direct view and some projection sets made in the 1990's.

While it is possible to repair in some cases this problem it is quicker and cheaper just to bypass the module--you will no longer have the PIP function.

Here are the bypass instructions:

1.) With the set unplugged remove the back cover and locate the PIP board to the left side of the set--one wire (usually green) is soldered to the metal shield. Unsolder the lead and set it aside.

2.) The board is plugged in and you will have to release the two tabs at the bottom to pull it out.

3.) Locate the pins on the large plug (should be 12 pin) on the bottom of the board.

4.) You need to CUT the copper foil traces with an Exacto knife on pins 5, 7, 9. and 11 near the plug so they are no longer connected to the plug.

5.) You install (on the bottom of the board) a 4.7 mfd filter cap with the + on pin 7 and the - or negative on pin 9.

6.) You install (on the bottom of the board) a 4.7 mfd filter cap with the + on pin 5 and the - (negative) on pin 11.

7.) Reinstall the PIP board and make sure the caps do not touch anything near that board; solder the ground wire back to the shield.

The reason the board fails is because the surface mounted caps dry out and or leak onto the circuit board---there are a lot of them.

I have seen shops replace some of the caps and get it to work but sooner or later more go bad so usually it is better just to bypass the board and not have the PIP feature anymore.

I believe your Kenmore is an older mechanical machine. If so, how long has it been since you've given it a good cleaning and oiling? Mechanical machines need frequent TLC, otherwise the old oil turns into a glue-like substance and starts sticking things together, including your selector levers and dials. Give your machine's bobbin area a good cleaning with a soft brush to remove dust and lint.

Then, use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil. Open the case top and free arm cover (if it has one--if it is a flat bed, tilt the machine back so you can access the moving parts under the sewing surface), gently handrotate the handwheel toward you, watch where metal rubs metal and apply 1-2 drops of oil. (Your owner's manual may have instructions for oiling and your machine may also have oil ports--little holes-- where oil should be applied.) Do not skip the feed dog moving parts. Also, there is usually an oil port behind the bobbin mechanism next to the case. Put a single drop of oil on the bobbin race. Do NOT oil plastic, rubber, or belts! Be sure to move the selector levers and dials and, if possible, apply a couple of drops to their moving parts as well. To help loosen things quicker, direct hot air from a handheld hairdryer into the internal mechanics of the machine. Repeat the oil/heat process until things are moving freely.

In the future, be sure to give your machine a thorough cleaning and oiling after about 40 hours of sewing use. A drop of oil on the bobbin race is good every 8 hours. If your machine sets unused, oil every six months to keep it operating.

mt 32 inch Bush lcd has a yellow streak running vertically through the picture. Is it worth getting it repaired ?


A yellow streak down the middle of an LCD Direct view TV (Not projection) is almost 100% the LCD panel. NO, just buy a new set.

my 2001 lincoln ls wont go into 4th or 5th gears. Took it to a trans shop and they recommended a rebuild for 3000+ dollars. But Ive been reading that alot of lincolns with the same problem getting err

Shift Patterns Upshifts
Transmission upshifting is controlled by the powertrain control module. The PCM receives inputs from various engine or vehicle sensors and driver demands to control shift scheduling, shift feel and torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.
The PCM has an adaptive learn strategy to electronically control the transmission which will automatically adjust the shift feel. When the battery has been disconnected, or a new battery installed certain transmission operating parameters may be lost. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must re-learn these parameters. During this learning process you may experience slightly firm shifts, delayed, or early shifts. This operation is considered normal and will not affect the function of the transmission. Normal operation will return once these parameters are stored by the PCM.

Apply Components Band — Overdrive

During 2nd and 5th gear operation, hydraulic pressure is applied to the overdrive servo.
  • This pressure causes the piston to move and apply force to the band.
  • This action causes the overdrive band to hold the overdrive drum.
  • This causes the overdrive sun gear to be held stationary through the adapter plate and the overdrive drum.
Band — Low/Reverse
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
During 2nd gear operation, 1st gear operation and reverse, hydraulic pressure is applied to the low/reverse servo.
  • This pressure causes the servo to move and apply force to the low/reverse band.
  • This action causes the low/reverse brake drum to be held.
  • This action causes the low/reverse planetary assembly to be held stationary.
Band — Intermediate
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
During 3rd gear operation, hydraulic pressure is applied to the intermediate servo.
  • This pressure causes the servo to move and apply force to the intermediate band.
  • This action causes the direct clutch drum to be held.
  • The intermediate band holds the intermediate brake and direct clutch drum to the case in 3rd gear.
  • This causes the input shell and forward sun gear to be held stationary.
Clutches — Direct
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The direct clutch is a multi-disc clutch made up of steel and friction plates.
  • The direct clutch is applied with hydraulic pressure and disengaged by return springs and the exhaust of the hydraulic pressure.
  • It is housed in the direct clutch drum.
  • During 4th, 5th, and reverse gear application, the direct clutch is applied transferring torque from the forward clutch cylinder to the direct clutch drum.
  • This action causes the forward sun gear to drive the pinions of the low/reverse planetary carrier.
Clutches — Forward
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The forward clutch is a multi-disc clutch made up of steel and friction plates.
  • The forward clutch is applied with hydraulic pressure and disengaged by return springs and the exhaust of the hydraulic pressure.
  • The forward clutch is applied in all forward gears.
  • When applied, the forward clutch provides a direct mechanical coupling between the center shaft and the forward ring gear and hub.
Clutches — Coast
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The coast clutch is a multi-disc clutch made up of steel and friction plates.
  • The coast clutch is applied with hydraulic pressure and disengaged by return springs and the exhaust of the hydraulic pressure.
  • The coast clutch is housed in the overdrive drum.
  • The coast clutch is applied when in 1st, 3rd, D4, and reverse positions.
  • When applied, the coast clutch locks the overdrive sun gear to the overdrive planetary carrier, thus preventing the one-way clutch from overrunning when the vehicle is coasting.
    • This allows the use of engine compression to help slow the vehicle and provide engine braking.
Clutches — Intermediate
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The intermediate clutch is a multi-disc stationary clutch made up of steel and friction plates which are in a module assembly that includes the cylinder and frictions.
  • Applied with hydraulic pressure.
  • Disengaged by a return spring and releasing of hydraulic pressure.
  • Hydraulic pressure is feed through a feed tube in the case worm trail.
  • Uses a bonded piston in an aluminum housing.
  • Applied in during a 2-3 shift event.
  • Transfers torque from the sun gear to the planetary carrier.
  • Torque transfer causes the one way clutch to engage and holds the sun gear from turning, delivering 3rd gear.
One-Way Clutch — Direct
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The direct one-way clutch is a sprag-type one-way clutch that is pressed into the center shaft.
  • The direct one-way clutch is driven by the ring gear of the overdrive planetary carrier.
  • The direct one-way clutch holds and drives the outer splines of the center shaft in 1st, 3rd, 4th and reverse gears.
  • The direct one-way clutch overruns during all coast operations and at all times in 2nd and 5th gear.
One-Way Clutch — Intermediate
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The Intermediate One-Way Clutch is a sprag type one-way clutch.
  • The Intermediate One-Way Clutch connects the intermediate assembly to the input shell and sun gear assembly in third gear.
One-Way Clutch — Low/Reverse
For component location, refer to Disassembled Views in this section.
The low/reverse one-way clutch is a sprag type one-way clutch.
  • The low/reverse one-way clutch holds the low/reverse drum and low/reverse planetary assembly to the case in 1st and 2nd gear.
  • In all other gears the low/reverse one-way clutch overruns.

My T.V. has a funny color .. more of double viewing with purple and green what can I do to fix this?


Your set has a problem with its convergence circuitry. In many cases this can be simply failure of solder connections to the output integrated circuits due to the heat they generate, and resoldering them fixes the trouble. This is a repair you might be able to try for yourself if you have experience with electronic soldering. Or there might be component failure which would require the equipment to isolate and replace the bad parts, which is a repair level best left to professionals. In some cases where the set has digital convergence, the failure might be in the computer control portion. This means the repair might range from only a very few dollars in parts to quite a lot of dollars, plus whatever labor rate the servicer charges. If you aren't looking for an excuse to replace the set, getting an estimate on a professional repair would be the best suggestion.

Degaussing is deliberately applying a magnetic field to the face of a picture tube. This is done to neutralize the effect of other magnetic fields that can cause color distortion. Degaussing isn't done in projection sets because they have separate tubes for each color.

There is a little pink dot on the tv, i think its a pixel that is not working. Is there anyway to fix that?


If this is a projection TV set, it is possible that there is some dirt in the lens system. If the dot is pink, it is most likely the dirt is in the path of the green. In projection tube sets, it is also possible to have a burn spot on the phosphor of a tube.

If your set is a direct view set such as a liquid crystal, or a plasma, or a flat panel, this can also mean a dead pixel on the green. Dead pixels cannot be revived.

Depending on the particular nature of the fault, you will need an experienced TV service tech to service your set.
