Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to check wireless security key or passphrase on NETGEAR routers.

Most of the times after configuring the wireless connection on the NETGEAR ROUTERS, the user either forgets the security key or misplaces it.

In order to get this key we need to login to the router's page using any computer which is physically connected to router. The below steps are applicable for most of the NETGEAR routers.

Please follow the steps on a computer connected to the router so as to check the network key:

1. Open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari).
2. Access the router, usually by typing 'http://192.168.1.1' or'http://192.168.0.1' or 'http://www.routerlogin.com' in the address bar.
3. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that Username and Password are case sensitive).
4. Click on Wireless Settings (under Setup) from the left menu.
5. Check if WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) or WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) is selected under 'Security Options'.
6. If WPA-PSK is selected, copy the code entered in the passphrase(or network key).
7. If WEP is selected, copy the code entered in the key that has been checked.

This is the code required for connecting the wireless computer to the router's wireless network.

In some cases, for security reasons the passphrase might show as asterisks. In this case type a new Password and click apply. You will then have to use the same Password for all the wireless devices connecting to the network.

Hope the above steps will help the user to locate or reset the wireless security key.

how to secure my wireless router

    • 1 Connect your wireless router per the instructions in your user manual.
    • 2 Open your Internet browser and enter the IP address assigned to your router. Major manufacturers assign different default IP addresses to their routers. For example, Netgear routers use 192.168.0.1 while Linksys uses 192.168.1.1. Consult your manual for details.

    • 3 Log in to your router configuration by typing the username and password specified in your manual.
    • 4 Set your Service Set Identificatier (SSID) by typing it into the box. This is the name of your wireless network. Make it a unique phrase; the default SSID is usually the name of the router manufacturer, such as Netgear or Belkin.
    • 5 Set your wireless network's security protocol to WPA 2.0 -- Wi-Fi Protected Access. This encrypts any data sent over the network and allows access only to users who have the security key. Set your security key as something not easily guessed. A string of random numbers and letters is recommended. Be sure to record this security key in a safe place so you can recall it when adding a new device to your network or changing network security settings.

lost security key to router

To RESET the Netgear, power up the Netgear then press and hold the RESET button at the back of the router until all the LEDs flash. Connect a LAN cable from the Netgear to the LAN port on your computer, open a browser and enter the Netgear configuration URL -
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = password You can now change the default admin password and configure the wireless settings.
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

router wifi and computer dont connect

Some later model wireless routers have the Password(ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router andthis information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adaptersin your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit yourrequirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorizedaccess. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cablefrom your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computerand enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login andpassword and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID andEncryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 togenerate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born inJanuary 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. Toconnect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure thewireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ieSSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops cancommunicate with your wireless router.http://www.fixya.com/support/r10267861-network_security_key

I need help getting the wireless key from the router

If you need wireless password(security key like WEP or WPA) or you would like to setup wireless security for your Netgear router, access the router setup page by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1(sometimes it's 192.168.0.1) in the address field of your browser and then press Enter.
Enter
admin for the router user name and your password (or the default, password).

After logging in. Look at the main menu on the left, click on Wireless Settings, from there you can check the Wireless Key(For WEP you need Key 1,2,3 or 4 whichever is selected... For WPA you need passphrase) or you can setup wireless security from there if you haven't done so.
