Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Clean your CPU Tower every once in a while.

If you want your computer smooth and to not make alot of noises, clean the CPU Tower. Dust can collect in the fans and slow the fans down.

Our fan is constantly running now for the last last 3 days when our computer is on. We have the computer on all day and shut it down at night. It is louder than normal. Why is this and can it be fixed. The computer and tower is only 3 years old.

Its not a problem if you have the computer running all day long. Get an additional fan for your computer. An additional fan will reduce the noise as more fans running at low speed produce low sound that a single fan at high speeds. Make sure that the CPU is free from dust. More the DUST, higher the heat and higher the noise.

sir, my sony vgn cs100E laptop fan is not working, i keep my laptop very clean, but now when i start windows the laptop automatically shutdown after 3 min processing. Fan is not working. what should i do? somebody told me about dust cleaner or external Fan Kit.... what should i do??? Thanks Faiz

Hello Faiz

OK, the thing is, if the fan is not rotating at all, you will need to replace it. The problem related to the computer shutting down, is the fact that the CPU overheats, and then shuts down the computer to protect the system components.

SO, if the fan actually rotates, you will need to clean the fan from all the dust particles collected on it. If the fan does not rotate at all, you will need to replace the broken fan.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

melting plastic smell/ computer slow and shuts down after about 15mins

Hi there.
The reason you can smell burning plastic and why its shutting down after a short time is because its overheating. This can be caused by a build up of dust on the CPU fan, overtime with dust build up computers struggle to keep themselves cool and tend to shut down unexpectedly, chances are this is the problem with your machine, my advice would be to remove the power cord, open the side panel of the computer and clean all the dust away from inside the tower, do this with a soft, clean paintbrush making sure you remove the dust carefully and gently, also make sure the CPU fan and the heat sync behind it is completely free of dust or any other foreign objects.
Once you are happy that its clear of dust, close or return the side panel, plug in the power cord and turn the PC on, you may find that the PC will stay on for longer with the smell dramatically reduced.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!

I've had a bad dust problem and my cpu fan began making a loud whirring noise and finally the computer shut down altogether. Took the cover off totally cleaned out the dust and turned the power back on. Still no action. Is it just one main fan problem? Don't know which one it is. Thinking the fan, if inoperable automatically shuts down the computer? Any ideas?

If the computer detects overheating or fan failure it will shut down automatically. If you replace the fan you should be fine. Remove your old fan and try to get one that connects the same way, some of them connect directly to the heat sink, others to the motherboard.

The visible fan at the top of my tower appears not to be running. Also computer makes a lot of noise and several times when I have turned it on it shuts down. There appears to be a lot of dust on the fan blades. Would a can of forced air help

. You could try air but if the fan does not work the computer overheats and shuts down to protect itself.

The air won't hurt, but more likely you have a bad fan which is going to require either you or someone to open the cover, go into the computer, remove the fan, buy a new one and put it back in.
