Tip & How-To about Brother HL 5170DN Laser Printer

Brother HL 5170DN Printer Toner error

Trick Brother HL 5170DN printer into think there is toner left. Rather than run out for a new toner cartridge use a small (.5 x .5 in.) piece of black electrical tape to cover the sensor hole on the non-gear side of the cartridge. By covering the hole the printer is fooled into thinking the hopper is full of toner.

I had this issue and I used a small (.5 x .5 in.) piece of black electrical tape to cover the sensor hole on the non-gear side of the cartridge. By covering the hole the printer is fooled into thinking the hopper is full of toner.

i have brother hl5250dn laser printer . i bought a new cart. but some pages print then the toner led is blink and status led is red how to slove this problem

It could be a defective cartridge or a half fill re-fill. Here's a trick you can try. Ir you look at the end with the plug of the cartridge you will see a clear plastic piece. It looks like a lens. Place a piece of black tape over it and re install it. It will make the printer think it's a new cartridge. Steven 818-888-0006

My toner cartridge refuses to come out. Is there a release somewhere that isn't working when I open the access door?

Yes, the release is on the black lever connected to the door on the left. If that won't release it you will need a new developer drive gear, #LM4225001

I taped a very small white piece of paper over the sensor eyes on either side of the cavity where the cartridge fit. I read that coloring in the actual "windows" that are on either side of cartridge also may help so I did that too.

So open the front, remove cartridge, look on the cartridge for a small circle and color them with black marker (or use electrical tape), look where they would have aligned inside the cavity, tape a small piece of white paper over those sensor eyes.

I just did this and it stopped the blinking. Don't know how long but based on my reading, one of these was the trick.

Trick the thing. Put a piece of black electrical tape on the "eye". (Take cartridge out, on right side there's a small clear hole). Worked for me!
