Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Before you change your TV's LAMP... read this!

I see more and more people changing their Faulty "Lamp" in their Big Screen TV's, well all power to you, (pun intended)... seriously though.. then I read and NOW it has... .........<---   fill in your own... "symptom". OK , Well please realize this.. The LAMP is a "Result" generally a SYMPTOM, NOT the "Cause"... the "Cause" of this failure, is what must be fixed, or remedied. There nay be several that can cause same symptoms but NOT same cause. And in any event,  or else, guess what ... you will  simply need another lamp real soon.. that's even if it was only that. Due to the fact, that the real problem, has gone unfixed... So I know we all want to save $$, but NOT getting a qualified serviceman, really, in the end will just cost you more. These days we don't design sets to be serviced... and if they are it's modular fixes. Most of these faults are repeat ones and shouldn't take anyone worth their salt much time to diagnose and repair. So before you all dive in... find a reputable service centre/man.. and ask for a "Firm Quote" .. you may be surprised.. pleasantly.. and anyway who wants to die for a Big Screen TV. I have been doing this for 35 years, have you?.

Sounds like you blew a capacitor on your power supply board. Common problem that is addressed elsewhere on this site. I had the same problem on my Samsung LNT4672F, and replaced the blown or bulging capacitors with better ones. That was about 4 years ago. I now am having other issues with the TV, vertical multicolored bars across the screen, and am seeking resolution (pun intended).

These units are famous for bad Capacitors in the DM module and power supply module. This is a very tight chassis and I would not recommend trying this one without some professional help. This is a real chinese puzzle (no pun intended). This should not be a real expensive repair. Thanks for using fixya. I am glad to help.

problem with TV turning on and off sound remains on though

Changing the lamp is easy enough. The lamp is about $250.00 . There's a lamp cover door usually in the back that removes, then the lamp housing will be displayed held in with 2 screws most of the time,, then you will be able to pull the lamp assembly out.

after tv is turned on it shuts off automatically

This is indicative of a failing lamp and/or dirty filter. The set keeps track of the hours of operation and trys to inform you when it is having problems. I ignored the signals and ended up with a blown lamp preceeded by my cleaning a dirty filter. On the bright side (no pun intended) my lamp lasted over 3 years without cleaning the filter. I was able to purchase a replacement lamp on ebay with overnight shipping and insurance for 160.00US, replaced the lamp and am back up and watching a better brighter picture.
