Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

Moving a Refrigerator What is the best way

If you just bought a used refrigerator or are moving and need to move refrigerator, what is the best way to do it and have it work when you need it to again?

There are a few things to consider before any move is made.

First, do not lay a fridge on it’s back if the coils are on the back. Other refrigerators can be laid on their back but that is not the preferred way to move a fridge.

Here’s what you want to look for. Open the back of the refrigerator and see what way the tubing comes out of the compressor. The compressor is the black tank type thing that has a few copper tubes coming out of it. Look for the side of the compressor that has the two tubes sticking out of it. Now, when you lay your refrigerator on it’s side you want to have those tubes sticking up. By doing this you will not have any of the oil running out of the compressor and into the copper tubing where it can be trapped.

If you move your refrigerator this way you can leave it on it’s side indefinitely without harming it. You also can plug it in immediately without having to let the oil settle back into the compressor.

There is one other thing that you want to be careful of though… While the refrigerator is on it’s side make sure not to bang down hard or go over nay large bumps that may cause it to slam down hard. This can damage the springs that isolate the compressor from the body of the refrigerator. If these get damaged it can cause the compressor to rattle or knock when it starts or stops. To avoid this, either wrap a strap around the compressor and suspend the compressor with a strap to the top of the refrigerator body, or shove some cardboard or other padding into the hole around the compressor to support the compressor weight.

Be following these instructions you will be able to have a trouble free refrigerator moving experience.

Moving a Refrigerator What is thebest way

If you already have moved it wrong, you can sometimes get it working byplugging it in and unplugging it a number of times with an hour or so inbetween.

Bought used and had to lay on it's side to transport to home. I left it off for a couple of house, but it isn't cooling. I hear the fan, on the freezer side, but very little air and not very cold coming out.

I just bought a new GE refrigerator and it was laying down for approximately 30 minutes during transport. Please let me know how long I need to leave it standing upright before I turn it on.
