Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

My WebCam won't work or Testing your WebCam.

So your webcam will not work. You can't "Find it" and you don't know what to do. Well, what you need to do, is first, one MUST find out, if the device shows up in "Device Manager". It should show up as "PC Camera". or "PCI Device" If it isn't then try to "Rescan Devices" now,.. hopefully, it IS in Device Manager. NOW, we have to install the "Driver" for it. So, either you have it on CD/DVD or you have downloaded it from the Manufacturers Web Site. In any event, if necessary Un-compress to a Directory, then, Install the Drivers. Remember to install as administrator, If it wont install correctly, then, try going to Device Manager, and right click on the PC Camera, right click, and select "Update Drivers" show it where to look, "in the Dir or place you un-compressed it to" they should be recognized and they should now install. Now to test, if you have successfully installed your webcam, well, you need to know if it is working? Here is a program to "Show" the picture. Download AMCAP2. This is a DirectX based software, and usually works with all windows. from here http://en.softonic.com/s/amcap-2.0-webcam Again run Amcap2 as Administrator.

Simply double click the Amcap2.exe, and then you should be able to choose your web camera from under the Devices Tab, Click on it, & Check to choose it. Then go to the "Preview" tab and Check that too, so now you can see image. There, you now know your camera is A OK, and now you can set about setting it up for "Other" applications, Skype,WebChat etc.

camera not working

Why does it not work? What is the problem with it?

Is the webcam driver installed in the Device Manager under Imaging Device? Click Start/Control Panel then look for System or System and Performance. Open it and look for the Device Manager. It might be under hardware depending on your operating system. Once you have the Device Manager open look for Imaging Device. If you see it click the + sign next to Imaging Device to expand it to see the webcam. Make sure it says it is working properly.

If you don't see it under Imaging Device then you need to go to the manufacturers website and download the webcam drivers.

Get online and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Acer Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating system when requested. Download and install the Webcam drivers.

Maybe it is installed but you don't know how to start the webcam. There are not buttons or switches to make it start. It is driven by the application software program.

You have to open the webcam software to activate or start the webcam. There is no button to push or switch to turn on. The webcam software is somewhere in the program list. Click Start/Programs then search for any reference to webcam or camera. Sometimes the webcam might be inside one of the manufacturers folders in the program list so search the folders for it. Some manufacturers have something like Entertainment Experience that will open and show all the entertainment devices such as the dvd drive, webcam, media player, etc. if you see it click it to launch it then click on the webcam or camera icon.

Try using ManyCam

You can always download Manycam and install it. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type: "download.cnet.com" (without the quotes). Click on the link to go to the site. When the site opens look down on the left and you will see a gray area that says Find Software. Type "Manycam" (without the quotes) in the white search area then hit the search mirror. When it brings back your results look for the one that says ManyCam Virtual Webcam. Down load it and install it. Make sure you remove the check box on any junky programs it would like to install. You only want to install ManyCam, no additions whatsoever during the install. ManyCam is totally FREE and easy to use, and you will always know where your webcam software is.
