Tip & How-To about Kenmore 22.0 cu. ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator with Filtered Ice and Water

Kenmore side by side is not cooling , and the coil at the back is freezing

Hi.

When the fridge is not cooling , and the coil at the back is freezing, the problem is always the defrost system.

The defrost system function is to prevent the condenser coils from freezing.

When the condenser coil is frozen, the unit will not cool down anymore, as heath connot be pumped out of the fridge and freezer.

The defrost system comprises of a defrost thermostat, a fan, and an heating element, and it is located behind the freezer firewall.

In the example below, taken from my daily Fixya solutions I will use a Kenmore side by side 363.50227000.

If your model is different, then you will need to order parts for your model, do not use the parts below. To find parts , try Sears, or see: Where do I find parts and diagrams for my...

Also diagram and parts location may differ.

Here parts to be tested, click on the link to purchase part:

Defrost thermostat (part 240 on diag)

Is tested removing it from the unit, after disconnecting power firts. Test is done using a multimeter set at Rx1 (Ohms).
Ifthe part is good the multimeter will read low or zero impedance at roomtemperature, if thermostat is bad, it will stay open (infinity).

Heater (part 230)

Itis tested reading Ohms , similarly to thermostat, if the heater hascontinuity, then it is good, if circuit is open, it must be replaced.

evap fan asm (Part 613)
It is tested energizing the motor, and observing if it is working.

Thesystem can also be tested by jumping the defrost thermostat, and observing if the element is heating up and the fan working.

for safety reasons, all testing and repair must be done by a trained person.

Before attempting repair, better contacting Kenmore after sale service at the number listed on your owners Use and Care manual.

not cooling properly, food is spoiling in the fridge and ice melting, foods defrosting in freezer. there is frost on the back of the freezer.

Hi.

The back of the freezer icing up means that there is a problem with the defrost system. When the defrost system is not working the evaporator coils freeze up , resulting in compressor and fan running most of the time and in reduced or no cooling as the condenser goes under stress and the system loses efficiency.

Defrost system problems are quite a common issue with refrigerators. Coils freeze because of a defective defrost system. With coils frozen the condenser will go under stress and will loose efficiency. The result is the system not producing enough cold to refrigerate the fresh food section while the freezer section instead keeps working.

Try disconnecting power overnight. Allow the freezer to defrost with power off. If the fridge works after that you have a defective defrost system. In that case the problem may come back after a couple of days. To fix the problem the parts comprised in defrost system must be tested, so to find and replace the defective part.

The defrost system comprises defrost thermostat, heater, defrost control and fan. The parts that fail more commonly are thermostat and heater. Both parts are located behind freezer firewall and tested reading impedance with a multimeter. Element and thermostat are faulty if they return Ohms infinity (the circuit is open) when reading impedance with a multimeter at the part's contact.

If thermostat and element are OK, the next part to be tested is the fan. Fan can be tested by simply checking that the motor is running when energized.

Here a tip explaining how to deal with a similar problem on a different fridge model: Fridge not cooling. Procedure is similar with your model.

Freezer is frosted in back Refrigerator is warm

The problem is the defrost system located behind the freezer back panel.

The defrost system (AKA evap. system) is composed by an heating coil, a fan , and a defrost thermostat, and its function is avoiding ice formation on coil.
When defrost system is defective the fridge wont cool down properly

In your fridge , either evaporator fan, thermostat or heating element is faulty, and the ice on coils is preventing the appliance from cooling down properly.

Try first a complete defrost, leaving the unit unplugged overnight, if this does not fix the problem, then there is a fault.

Motor runs, freezer defrosting and fridge won't cool

If you have frozen coil at the back of the freezer section, then the defrost thermostat is usually failing. Allow the fridge to defrost completely overnight. If the fridge restarts cooling immediately after defrost, then the problem was the defrost system. In that case the fridge will stop cooling again in a couple of days, as soon as the evaporator coils restart freezing and the condenser goes under stress with the whole cooling system loosing efficiency.
