Tip & How-To about Dryers

Washer & Dryer care & Maintenance

At least once a year, you want a qualified technician to come out to your home and clean out the dryer of built-up lint. This includes the housing holding the lint filter as well as pulling off the front and cleaning out the entire inside! What this does is allows the dryer to "breathe" and dry more efficiently. We're at a point now in society where rate caps are coming off of our electrical bills and we need to watch our pennies. But also, this extends the life of the dryer.

Washers are a little more common sense. DO NOT load above the basket past the top row of holes! What happens, is there is a coupler on the bottom of the basket that slides over the motor shaft and connects the gearcase (transmission) to the basket; hence the term, "Direct Drive". When you load past the holes, the weight of the water creates TOO MUCH weight, and eventually blows that coupler out!! You will know when it's shot because the basket won't turn at all!

If your dryer is not drying like it once did or if you just have nottaken the time to give yourself a clean dryer in a long time then youneed to do that. At least once a year the dryer cleaning should takeplace. Lint build up in the dryer duct is one of the main causesfor your dryer to fail.

I have a Maytag neptune dryer model # MDE5500AY. I smelled a smokey and electrical smell tonight. What's going on? Lint catcher is clean and I also clean around dryer. House was built in 2004 and dryer is most likely from that year.

the fault is lint build up around the dyer element the element must be cleared of all lint after years of use despite having a catcher lint does get into the dryer in time it will build around the heating element and start to burn this is unsightly but more so very dangerous as it does cause house fires have the element cleaned

best of luck

my dryer was just working two minutes ago it shutted itself off and wont go back on again

check to make sure you didn't blow the house fuse, if that's good unplug dryer, remove bottom panel, take out the lint filter, then remove the duct that the lint filter sldes into and you'll see the blower wheel,to the right and on top of the blower wheel housing you'll see the thermal fuse, could be a 3392519 or a 3390719,check that with a meter, while you're there clean out the duct and vac out the inside of dryer,if you have a shop vac,put it on blow and blow off the motor and blow all the lint from the back to the front so you don't have to pull the drum, then check the vent line and make sure the air is blowing open the flapper fully outside,if it's a long run blow the line out from the wall with a leaf blower to clean out all the lint that is built up in it,if the fuse is good you'll have to see if you're getting power down to the motor, could have a bad timer or a burnt wire somewhere, hope this helps, also you should clean out the dryer at least once a year so you don't have any fires

two hours to dry clothes

I assume you have cleaned the lint screen in the dront of your dryer. If you haven't, please do so.

It sounds like your rear vent hose is plugged up or obstructed. Pull the hose off the back of the dryer and remove all built up lint. Check the complete length of the hose for lint and remove and finally, check the vent housing that connects to your house and remove built up lint there as well. Once the blockage is cleared, your dryer will work much more efficiently.

Burning smell during drying cycle, coming from the inside back left grate. The grate appears discolored.

Usually when a gas dryer overheats it's because of a defective cycling thermostat or a clogged vent system. Clean any lint from the internal and external ductwork, and/or replace the cycling thermostat . If you don't clean out the lint trap frequently, your dryer may have small lint fires inside the cabinet. The smell from these fires can leave a strong odor in the clothes drum.

Also, if there are any solvents, paints, lacquers, etc. in use in the house, your dryer may alter and/or amplify the fumes to an odor unlike the natural fumes given by the solvent, paint, etc.

Here's what to do:

  • First, clean all of the lint from the inside cabinet and ductwork of your dryer.

  • Have a qualified appliance repair technician inspect the dryer for damage caused by any lint fire.

  • Move all containers of flammable liquids at least 50 feet away from the dryer. Gas dryers have a large flame when operating properly and can ignite the fumes of any flammable liquid or gas.

  • Then, try to clear the odor, by running a couple of loads of old rags or towels.
