Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Access or Delete "System Locked Files & Folders" on Non-System Drives using Windows 7

But, if you only have XP, you can try this small program that works great. It is not compatible yet with W7 or Vista.

W7 version: -

I received a large portion of this helpful tip from a fellow Techie. I just added a few extras and clarified a few itty-biddy important things. Enjoy.

Please read and fully understand everything below before proceeding.

System Locked Folders may include, but are not limited to: -

i386, amd64, System Volume Information, Recycle Bin, Recycler, and other System Locked Folders that you may feel are not required on your Non-System Drive which you currently can't access.

DO NOT DELETE OR ALTER any of these type of Files or Folders on any System Hard Drives as they are used for the correct operation of these Systems. This is intended for Non-System Storage Devices Only.

First you need to enable Hidden Files. Several ways to get there, here is one way: -

Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Show hidden files and folders (in the Folders Option) > Click on Show hidden files, folders, and drives > Apply > OK then exit out of all these screens.

For your Systems Safety, please reverse the above operation after you have completed what needs to be done.

Let's start: -

You may get a confimation or other screen at times. Just OK or allow it if it pops up.

1. From your Non-System HD, go the offending folder, or sub-folder.
2. Right click on it and then left click on Properties.
3. Left click on Security then Advanced and then Owner.
4. Left Click on Edit and you will see a choice.
5. Change the current owner to yourself or another administrator you can use with full control.
6. Tick the box below that says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
7. Left click on Apply then OK.
8. Exit out of Advanced Settings.
9. The screen that should still be there is the (folder name) Properties screen. If not, just follow the steps above till you return to it.
10. Left click on Edit and you will see Permissions in the bottom half.
11. Tick all the Allow boxes available. If you tick Full control, it will automatically tick all the available
options except for Special permissions. You can't tick this box so leave it unticked.
12. Left click on Apply and then OK.
13. Exit out of the EHD's folder and go back into it. Open the main offending folder again and you will see a padlock has now been added to the icon. If no padlock, you have missed a step and must repeat above processes.
14. It can now be deleted to the Systems Recycle Bin. Do not clean it up yet.
15. Restart your PC each time to ensure you have not lost anything, and Restore from Recycle Bin if you have.
16. Repeat these steps for each folder, one at a time.

This process does NOT work via Windows XP, but does work to remove XP and other Win O/S locked files.

Software for Canon LiDE 20 scanner (Vista compatible)

did you install the drivers? they were probably downloaded compressed- you need to look at your download list and install from there. don't know if vista refers to it as install wizard, as xp does, but check that the download was actually opened and installed. otherwise, it's sitting on your hdd doing nothing useful. i'm not familiar with vista, know a lot of people who tried it and switched back to xp. still waiting for the user reports for w7. supposed to be a great improvement on vista! so we wait and watch!
anyway, check out whether your patch for your scanner actually was installed!
good luck!

when i try to install language disk i am getting

Well if it works in XP and Vista then it is safe to say it isn't compatible with W7.

Remember, Windows 7 is not going to be released for another 2+ months.
I have found a large number of programs that just don't work with W7.

Your best bet is to check on Rosetta Stone's website to find out if they list W7 as a supported OS.

If you can get the software onto your computer, try right clicking on the scanner program--properties--compatability tab--check "run this program in Xp compatability". Worked for me in Vista

cant reprogram my sat dish

If you haven't already, try running the program in Vista's compatibility mode for XP. This page has instructions on how to do that.

If you've already tried that, or if it doesn't work when you try it, the program may simply be incompatible with Vista; if that's the case, you'll have to wait until the program's author releases a Vista-compatible version.
