Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Free Word, Excel etc compatible program

Micrososoft Office is a bit bloated, and not free.

A lot of people are already using a free Office program as a first choice, and some are also switching from MS Office to these due to MS Office's size and difficulty navigating the complex menus.

You may consider this great alternative "Open Office".

At about 150Mb download, it is still vastly smaller than MS Office versions and is compatible with nearly every MS Office program such as Word and Excel etc

It's a bit easier to navigate and use, tho still has some compexities. It is similar in speed to open, has occassional updates and produces great results.

new printer problem

Check that you did not install a 64-bit driver on a 32-bit system, Vista driver on Windows 7, etc. unless that is what your system specifically requires. Do not install the full package either, download the link on the website that says "driver only". A lot of the software printers install are kinda crappy because they assume you have no picture editing software, scanning software, etc. They are usually really cheap bloated software suits that don't compare to some of the more mainstream office products.

If you are a student and you must have MS-Office, I'd recommend getting Office 2007 Home and Student edition. This will lower the price quite a bit and you can install on three PCs (see Microsoft Office End User License Agreement).

If you just need an office suite, may I suggest OpenOffice. These were developed by Sun Microsystems and are free under the GNU/GPL license. These programs are quite robust and are able to keep up with the MS-Office. If you are already used to MS-Office, learning curve for OpenOffice is simple. Also, you can open and save MS-Office documents. You can download OpenOffice at www.openoffice.org. There are a wealth of online help for leaning to use OpenOffice.
