Most common problems with 2 cycle engines

Most common reason that it wont start or wont run is wrong gas mix or piston & cylinder is scarred they need at least 100 lbs.or more of compression in order to operate properly to see if the piston & cylinder is scarred remove muffler if it is scratch badly then thats you're problem some models are throw aways but some models are worth fixxing

why no compression on mantis

One reason that I have seen for no compression on a 2-cycle engine like the Mantis is severe scarring of the piston, rings and/or cylinder. This can be caused by not mixing the fuel with the proper amount of 2-cycle oil. The engine will normally run for a while but eventually it will die and not start again. If you have a compression tester, I would use it to test your compression. If it is lower than around 120, you may have this problem. You can remove the muffler and looking into the exhaust port with a flashlight to see if you have scratches going up and down the length of your piston. If you do then you are looking at a sizeable expense of replacing the short block. If you can do it yourself, you might be able to do it for less than $100 but if you have to have a dealer repair it, it might cost more than the tiller is worth.

I ran my blower without oil by accident and now it doesn't have resistance on the pull string and won't start, why?

Hello Stacy,
The reason two stoke engines run oil in the gas is for lubrication. By not mixing oil in the gas and running the unit may have scored the cylinder causing low compression. It may be time for a new blower. If in doubt, purchase a compression tester from a local auto parts store. They simply screw in the same threads that the spark plug does. Once threaded in, pull starter rope several times and observe reading. You should have at least 60 psi cold. If your reading is significantly lower, you will need a new cylinder and piston and wont be worth doing. Another method is to remove the muffler and look inside cylinder with a flashlight and look for scratches on cylinder wall. Hope this helped.

MY homelite BP-240 backpack blower will not run with out the assist of starting fluid. First I tried to start it with just pushing the gas primer bulb. after no success I just sprayed start fluid . It will run continus if I keep spraying( just 1 pull to start ). what can I do to repair it!

dont spray starting fluid in there to start it has to have a gas oil mix for the piston to have lubrication it will scar or burn the piston and cylinder wall check the fuel lines to see if they need replaced and the fuel filter also the priming buld to for cracks etc.

Stopped during use with half tank of gas left. Only 1 hr. use last year and 1 hr. this fall since new. Starter pulls same as when new, but fresh gas/oil mix, ether, and much cranking result in no signs of life. Cranked with muffler off- no response. Spark looks eak to me.

look inside where you took off muffler look at piston ring & piston & also cylinder wall if scarred & pitted then the engine will not start needs to be rebuilt with new ring, piston, cylinder head you might have also broke the flywheel key if its broke you will get a spart but weak & also will not start because timing is off it will act like it wants to but wont
