Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

A smaller more friendly FREE PDF Reader

Ever wondered why Adobe Reader is so huge, regularly updating, causes the occassional conflict with Word type programs, Emails and other programs?

Sure, some of you may be happy with it or really need it, but some are not, or are just curious about alternatives.

If you only want a PDF Reader, and with a similar quality to that of Adobe, and at a fraction of the size without any major program conflicts (that I have had in the past 2 years on dozens of PC's), try the free 'Foxit Reader" from a trusted site download: -

There are other good ones too, but I think this is the AntzPantz.

my mum has got problems loading adobe reader upgrades as it say invalid drive L:/ and there is no L drive on her computer

I assume you mean updates (improvements) rather than upgrades (new versions).

When downloading, do not let it do a default download. Select SAVE and choose where to download to the Adobe folder in Programs, in Local C:. Install it from there once downloaded.

If you constantly, regularly or occasionally have external hard drives, memory card readers, usb flash memory sticks, usb internet dongles, bluetooth devices, cellular phones or MP3/MP4 players
connected to the computer additional drive letters can be created.

If the first attempt to download the update occurred when any of these devices were connected then the download may remember this drive letter and be trying to download there whether it exists or not.

Certain types of viruses can sometimes create Ghost Drives on your computer.

If in doubt, remove adobe reader and all its components completely from add or remove, restart the PC and then download the latest version from www.adobe.com.

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Adobe Reader - Remove - remove all components > reatrat computer.

When installed properly, Adobe programs should alert you and prepare updates automatically
and should download to the Adobe folder in Programs folder.

No PDF documents on the computer will be affected.

Hope this helps

why is the adobe reader not working

Over time the size of the Windows registry begins to increase when there is an increase in the daily computing. Windows registry is a very important part of the Windows where the information about each program is stored in the form of very sensitive codes. A little disturbance in these codes can make a program useless and cause it to freeze and crash too often. The same is the case with the Adobe and other programs in our computer.
The registry errors in the computer not only make programs to malfunction but they also cause computer to slow down. What happens is that there gathers a lot of junk stuff in the computer. The invalid registry keys start to conflict with the valid ones and thus increase the load on computer.
There are various versions of the Adobe problem on computer. Most common among these is that the Adobe Acrobat crashes on the web browsers whenever you try to open pdf files through different web sites. If this is the case you can try changing the version of your Adobe. Also you can try changing the settings in the Adobe program to disallow it to open pdf files in the browser.
Try fixing this problem by updating the drivers in your computer. Sometimes the drivers also create a conflict situation and make programs to run poorly.
The above guidelines allow you to take measures to fix adobe and keep your Windows properly maintained. Prevention is the best cure. for best use registry cleaner reg in out to solve the problem

How to uninstall Adobe Reader 8.4.1 from Windows Vista

After going down the route of Start - Control Panel - Program Updates - Highlight the application and click, then select Delete / Uninstall applications and deleting - if that does not work completely then get a free 30 eval of Ashampoo from www.ashampoo.de and use this to clean your system of all the junk and also clean the registry as many applications will leave entries in there even though they are not being used thereby slowing down and potentially causing application and driver conflicts.

It is possible that somewhere along the line adobe reader became conflicted with an update from something else ect.

First thing you should try is uninstalling adobe reader completely in add/remove programs. Then Install the latest version of adobe reader.

This should put an end to the error messages and restore functionality to normal.
