the dishwasher won't drain

First thing try maybe a shop vac or cup to try to remove water out of bottom of dish washer to gain acess to the screen to check it out.
If you have to use a cup the last little bit if you have a turkey blaster you can get the last little bit up.
Food will settle in it and stop it up that is the most common reason for drain problem's hope this helps you out.
Once all water removed to acess it remove screen and clean if needed. Next you may have to remove drain hose to clean it.

a grainy grit remains on all my dishes. It's in the bottom of the dishwasher when the cycle is over. what is it and how can i fix it

I took everything apart in the bottom of the dishwasher, washed them and put them back together and now have clean dishes. I needed a star head to remove the screws, which I had. A Phillips screwdriver won't work. Food and gunk were clogging the drains and screens, even the spray wands. For the very bottom I used a shop vac to get all the dirty water out and then cleaned the small drain.

using shop vac 52722-90 for wet applications

yes, the foam filter is what you should use, also make sure you remove any bag, or paper filter, the water would make it fall apart.

Bought house. Inherited shop/vac. A bit old, but

If you are going to use the wet vac to remove water, be sure to remove the bag inside the canister first. Also, some wet vacs have an internal float that has to be installed, but that may not be the case with yours.
