Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to remember how to reassemble a laptop

Trying to repair your notebook yourself can be a daunting task. Laptop and notebook computers can be full of very small intricate parts that must be taken out and replaced in a special order. A simple way to remind yourself of that order is to record yourself taking it apart with a video camera. You can later play the clip in reverse or rewind it bit by bit to see exactly how you took apart your computer.

loose hinges on dell insperon 1318

Hi There,
Loose hinges ultimately need replacing, as tightening them is impossible. To get to the hinges in order to replace them, You'll need to remove the screen. This is a fairly daunting task for anyone without previous laptop repair experience, and can get frustrating pretty quickly. Your local repair shop should be able to do this for under $50.
Here is a link to a repair guide if you do decide to take it on yourself -

my dell inspiron 6400 has small horz line on screen

If you have tried this with an external monitor (and the line is not there)
then the problem is either the connection on your display cable or (more likely) a fault on your LCD panel. If it's still under warranty I would let Dell take care of it.
If you want to do it yourself, you need to get a replacement LCD panel, take the screen apart (the top half of the laptop) and switch out the LCD panel. Some small Phillips head screwdrivers are required, the screw heads on hinges etc. are tiny.
While this is not an overly difficult process, it may prove daunting to some people. Most computer repair shops like mine would charge $30-45 for labor on this plus the part, which according to ebay will run about $75. Make certain you get the correct size, as there was a 14.1" and a 15.5" model (They are not interchangeable). Screen size is measured diagonally across the actual screen and does not include the trim.

Where can i get my laptop repaired?

I highly recommend that you take your computer to a qualified DELL technician, for replacement of the frame -- it is not a "DO IT YOURSELF" type of task.

I would sell the computer "as is", i.e., with the current battery, and the current charger. If the buyer wants to "upgrade", they can easily replace those parts, at their expense.

motherboard is fried.. apparently due to water damage. how do i fix this myself.. the computer worked fine for months after spill now it wont even turn on!

Replacing a laptop motherboard is a daunting task. If you have never done it before, it will take hours to do and there will be a lot of frustration involved with taking it apart and putting all back together. The mother board will also be pretty expensive by itself and likely to be difficult to find. If you are trying to keep costs to a minimum, you might try to find an equivalent system at a site like pacificgeeks.com which sell refurbished and used systems with a 30 to 90 warranty at some amazing prices. With a laptop that is badly damaged, I usually find that it is better to replace than to repair.
