Tip & How-To about Philips 15PF5120 15 in. LCD Television

Green light but no backlight or video or blackscreen.

I had one that had a black screen and fixed the problem by repairing the inverter. When I opened the unit I looked at the capacitors on the inverter board and found them swollen. I looked at the bottom of the board and found that the fuse had opened up. The caps were a cheap quality low temp variety 150uF at 25V I replaced them with 330uF 25 volt 105C caps. I then replaced the 2.5A surface mount fuse with an axial 2.5A pico fuse and the TV worked beautifully.

when i turn it on screen read polaroid then it work for seconds then screen goes black

These sets have a backlight that allows you to see the picture...there is an inverter power supply that supplies 600-1000 volts to these backlights(they are essentially a flourescent tube called ccfl). the inverter power supplies in these units is under a lot of stress generating these types of voltages. My findings on the majority of these units is that the electrolytic capacitors in the inverter either leak or they develop a high ESR value, which in turn causes the circuit to malfunction..you may need to have someone with the proper equipment troubleshoot the inverter power supply....you may get lucky though...as I have found several sets where when you look at the capacitors(they look like little cans), they are bloated or the top vent is open and they are leaking electrolyte

The monitor screen went black but the power light stays on. Have turned it off and then back on. The screen comes on for about 1.5 seconds then goes black again, almost like it's timing out.

haynie1, If you shine a bright flashlight 1 inch from the black screen and can still see the Win-desktop screen, you will need to have have unit it fixed or trade it in for new wide screen. The fluorescent lamps on rear of lcd panel need high voltage to light them!!! If the CCFL inverter circuit has failed you will have a "black screen" problem. Do some reading in my fixya profile for a while, then you will understand problem. Follow the links to see if you will learn to do a DIY repair or not. Your unit's lamps may have too many HOURS on them and need to be replaced also. Good luck. 12fixlouie

my monitor goes dim after a few minutes. When you switch it off and on again the dsplay is ok then becomes so dark

Hello,

How dim is dim? If the picture is still visible just like half as bright then your have backlight tube problem and unit LCD needs to be replaced, not worth repair price. If the picture goes out almost to a black screen where you can just bairly see a faint image then you hold the screen just right then you have a backlight inverter issue. If the problem is the inverter then you should be able to replace a few parts and get your unit back going. If you think you can open the unit up and maybe solder a few parts then I would open the case and look for bad capacitors on the power supply board. I can send you pictures of what to look for if you are interested. We also have a repair service for those units, most power issues run $15.00 plus shipping. Let me know if you need help opening the unit and checking parts.
