Missing DVD/CD Rom drive letter
If your DVD/CDROM is not working ie..playing movies or not installing programs it may be becuase you have installed a ssoftware program that edited the regitry for the DVD/CDROM - (Limewire, any burning software, etc..) windwos installs an Upperfilter and or a Lowerfilter in the registry for the CDROM - to correct this follow these instructions:
To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers.
To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box (Vista) or regedit in the Run box (XP), and then click Regedit in the
Programs list if in Vista or click Open in XP.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. (Vista)
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkeys: (must be exact keys)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
Once you have clciked Class the click Edit on the menu at the top
Copy and paste the following key inclcuding the curly braces into the Find What box.
Click "Find Next"
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Highlight by clicking on "UpperFilter" and "LowerFilter" ONLY - then hit Delete on the keyboard and select Yes
4. Shutdown and restart the computer

Thanks for this info. I have been searching (without success) for a device driver for my cd-rw drive. Your solution worked the first time. Is there any way to prevent this from happening again? Speaking of device drivers. I have a Dell Computer with an NEC 7800A CD-RW Drive. Is there a place to look for the device driver? The only thing I could find was firmware driver that had to be saved to a floppy and the computer restarted with the floppy in the A: Drive. This was no help. I looked on both Dell's and Microsoft's web sites.

thank you for this tip and very greatful for other commenters who had voiced their problems. It solved the problem in seconds and DVD/CD is fully functional again!
Note; In my search to find next... I did not see any Upper Filer, only the Lower Filter was present. So I selected the Lower Filter and deleted it....restarted the computer. Went to check if D drive letter had arrived on the scene...Yes..there it was! Inserted a cd in the drive and it became alive, playing music. I was dreading the thought of calling a tech...but you saved me misery of calling someone, waiting for their arrival, and wasting hours to resolve the problem.
Thank you all for your generous sharing :-)

GREAAAAAATTTTT!!! It's been days I've been trying to solve the problem (drivers for CD or DVD drivers won't load + Yellow mark on Device Manager + no Devices appearing on My Computer).
I deleted Upper/Lower filters and ... tchanannnnn ....they are back and working.
Thanks a lot for the tip.
Really appreciated.

Wow, hats off to ya, ComputerDave! That was *exactly* my problem and solution: A suddenly-missing CD-RW drive that deleting the UpperFilter and LowerFilter for that registry entry fixed.
I'm a little aghast that a piece of software could inadvertently make my disc drive just disappear, but I'm so grateful that you had the solution. Good karma is definitely coming your way.

Thanks, spent hours trying to find driver for Matshita UJ-845D on the Internet to correct the problem, my computer no longer recognized the e drive, even though it still showed up in the Device Manger with a yellow exclamation mark. Then I came across your site, fixed the problem immediately. Hallelujah.
