Tip & How-To about Heating & Cooling

Combi Boilers Waste Energy

Combination boilers are called just that because they combine your hot water production and your space heating together with one boiler. The problem lies in the way that they produce hot water. To make the water hot, these boilers have a coil inside the chamber that the water for the space heating is held. The heat is transferred through the copper coil wall from the one water to the other.

The heat transfer of the efficiency of the transfer is not the problem. The problem is that you have to keep the boiler hot all of the time to make sure that you will have heat to make the water hot when you need it. To compound the problem you will find that boilers are typically very poorly insulated. The amount of heat that you will lose because of this poor insulation is unbelievable.

You have or are thinking about buying a Combi Boiler. Read this first because I will explain to you why you either have or are going to make a very big mistake.

Rather than go with this method of water heating, set up your boiler with a separate zone for an indirect water heater. Indirect hot water heaters transfer heat just as effectively, and they are usually very well insulated. The temperature drop in these indirect tanks is typically less than 1 degree F per hour. That’s not very much!

Keep in mind that even though this setup may cost you a bit more up front, that in the long run you will be saving more everyday. With the price of heating fuels going up daily you can bet that the indirect tank will pay for its self in a very short period of time.

i need to power flash a vaillant boiler. can you please help. water goes hold and cold, sometime the heating stop but the water works and vice versa. i was told by an engineering that it needs power flushing, although very expensive and would like to do it myself. thanks

Hi

Although not a PC problem, i have had this same issue on my Vaillant Boiler, the problem you are describing is not a power flush problem, you need to clean out your exisiting diverter valve or purchase a new one

The diverter valve is repsonsible for either providing hot water or providing hot water to the central heating, when this valve gets stuck in between the symptoms you have described above occur

I would also not recommned that you do a power flush yourslef as you may end up damaging the boiler and its pump

The hot water and central heating wont work together

what size of gas line is going into boiler and water heater? is it black iron ? natural gas or propane? have you checked gas pressure at water heater and furnace ? if they work fine individually then you have a problem with incoming gas pressure. Call gas company and ask them if they would come out and check gas pressure.
