Tip & How-To about Plumbing

Sump Pump Failure Warning Device A simple inexpensive homemade device to detect a sump pump failure in your home can be made for under $15. You will use this device in your sump pump hole or any other place in the home or business where you want to detect an abnormal level or rise of water that may cause damage due to mechanical failure. You can make this device with the purchase of a common smoke detector which can be purchased from any home repair retail outlet for between eight to $13, and a length of speaker wire (approximately 10?) for about two dollars. Total cost $10-$15. The smoke detector will be used to detect the presence of water at a predetermined height using the length of speaker wire as a switch to activate the smoke detector. To make the water level sensor device do the following: Remove the cover from the smoke detector. Strip and separate both wires from each end of the speaker wire. Expose ¼ - ½ inch wire at each end and split the wires to separate them from one another as needed to connect to the detector. (The end of wire leads to detect water level need only about one inch of separation.) Next, find on the smoke detector where the circuit is made when you push the button on the cover to test the smoke detector device. You will need to attach one lead end to each side of this circuit with the speaker wire leads. No soldering is necessary. Simply just slide one lead under a piece of metal which can be pried up slightly and let the pinching action be used to hold it in place. Place the second lead similarly on the other side of the circuit. Route the speaker wire to the outside of the case in a way to not interfere with the cover. Put a battery in and replace the cover to the smoke detector. Check that your connections on the smoke detector work by touching the two leads together on the end of the speaker wire. The alarm should go off the same as if you have pushed the test button circuit. Now you can place the smoke detector in a suitable location next to the sump and also place the exposed wire leads of the speaker wire down into the sump hole at the level you want to detect a ?high water level?. Make sure the wire leads do not touch anything that will cause them to short across one another and sound the alarm prematurely. When the water rises to the height of the wire leads, the water will act to short the leads in the same manner as touching them together. The level at which the leads should be set, should be a couple inches higher than the level at which the sump pump kicks on to pump the water out. If the pump fails and the water level rises to the wire leads, the smoke alarm will go off, alerting you to the situation.

How to replace a sump pump

There are 2 schools of thought regarding maintenance: you can carry out preventive maintenance (calendar based or hours run)... or, on condition maintenance... i.e repair it when it breaks down. What, is the consequence of a failure... if it's 'bad' replace it.... if not, wait until it fails. Hope this makes sense.

What does f05 mean on a hotpoint washing machine

f-05 usually relates to either the pump being blocked or the sump of this particular model being full of coins, color catchers etc.

first keep it simple, ensure outlet hose is not blocked or kinked....but if not follow these steps

  • To sort this isolate from mains
  • take off back inspection panel.
  • tilt machine forward- get sum1 to hold it for u.
  • The sump is the black hose attached to drum.
  • place a basin under this and loosen jublie clamp using star head screw driver/ 8mm socket,
  • pull sump downwards and remove any blockage.
  • note the plastic ball is part of the sump assembley.
  • refitt the sump again and tighten clamp, pull down firmly on sump to ensure fitted correctly
if there was nothing in the sump it is sumthing jamming the pump, hairgrip, nail, etc.

tilt machine forward as above with a basin ensuring isolated from mains power
  • pump is attached to other end of sump hose, right side of machine as you look in the back.
  • using flat screwdriver lift plastic tag up and slide pump assembley to the left releasing it from base of machine
  • clip of plastic cover from top of pump
  • remove wires from pump
  • u should now be able to turn pump around so u can see 3 hex head screws
  • remove screws taking note of the position of pump
  • remove pump and clear blockage
  • reverse steps to reassemble
if this does not sort it poss a new pump needed
