Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Secure Your Windows PC For Free

With the online holiday buying season upon us, the most important thing to remember is computer security. Each day millions of threats cycle through the Internet, most of which harm computers and home networks. These threats hunt for credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information and can be used against you in the form of identity theft. Here are some tips to help secure your PC and keep your information safe and locked down.

1. Windows Update
This is the number one reason computers fall victim to malicious threats (viruses, spyware, etc.) is not updating the Windows operating system. During the spring of 2009, the virus named "conficker" targeted computers that were not fully updated. To update the Windows, first the computer needs to be connected to the Internet, whether it would be wired or wireless network connection. Then go to Start > Programs > Windows Update. Let Widows Update complete and afterward your computer will be up-to-date.

2. Anti-Virus Program
Some sort of anti-virus software should be the bare minimum for computer security. Not having protection can increase the chances of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, and identity theft. There are some free as well as paid versions, but for basic web surfing and email free versions will work just fine. Here are some recommended free anti-virus programs.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
Avira Anti-Vir
Avast Home Edition
Microsoft Security Essentials

3. Firewall
A firewall blocks incoming web traffic not requested by the computer user. Firewalls can prevent malware from entering the computer thus fewer viruses and spyware. A great, free firewall program called Comodo can protect your PC and the user can select various security levels for added protection.

4. Windows Defender
Windows Defender is spyware program from Microsoft that is built in to Windows Vista and Windows 7 and as a download for Windows XP, which can be found here. Defender offers protection from spyware, pop-ups, and slow performance. To access Windows Defender, go to Start > Programs > Windows Defender then click the scan button at the top of the window and then remove the threats when complete. Windows Defender is a simple solution to increase computer performance.

5. Encryption
Encryption continues to be a major issue in protecting computer data if it fell into the wrong hands. Many users have huge amounts of information about themselves on their computer including pictures, internet history, email messages, contacts, login usernames and passwords, and much much more. What encryption does is locks the files with a series of numbers and letters making impossible to decode or read for that matter. But the user can read the files with a key and a password which unlocks the files that were encrypted. I recommend using TrueCrypt for encrypting files and works with all versions of Windows.

As for all security software, plan on allowing, at minimum, running all the security programs (anti-virus, firewall, Defender, and more) each week to make sure the computer is protected. It's very easy to secure computers and with a few clicks you even can make it automatic.

If questions arise or need assistance installing or running any of the programs mention above, please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to assist you in any way.

The outreach program for the holiday season How to write a good letter on why you and your family should be eligible for the program

Start with a list of reasons. Now put your reasons with sentences that best describe your reasons and or situation in complete sentences. Maybe catagorize in the paragraphs most important things first. Remember to use spell check. Your closing should be something like, Thanks For Your Consideration or even just Thank You. Make sure all points are clear and make sense. Good luck!

my compaq mini 110 was infected with THINK POINT VIRUS. i downloaded a malware scanning program which seemingly worked for about a day...with an abundance of pop ups and self restarts. as i researched for a muslim holiday that my coincide with teh holiday season my computer was immediately stopped for some security reason. it seemed like a virus but i'm not sure. now my internet explorer will not open at all. after scanning, attempting to access through the add-on, and using safe mode still nothing. HELP!!! DO I NEED TO COMPLETELY REINSTALL WINDOWS???

Hello
The re-installation of windows is however recommended, but you can try with follwing procedure to remove Think point Virus:-
1. Restart your computer in SafeMode - After Power-On the computer, just before Windows start, press F8 - From the selections, Select SafeMode
2. End ThinkPoint Process - Press Ctrl+Alt+Del from the keyboard to open Task Manager - Go to process Tab - Select 'hotfix.exe' and click on End Process - Close Task Manager
3. Remove Registry entries that the threat added. You MUST BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST. - Click Start > Run - Type in the field, regedit - Navigate and look for the registry entries mentioned above and delete if necessary
4. Delete malicious files that the threat added: - Base on the given location above, browse and delete the file - If no location is given, click Start>Search> and search for the files. - If cannot be deleted, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to access Task Manager, see if the file is running in the process. If it is, select the file and click End Process. Perform file delete again.
5. Scan computer with Antivirus Program - Update antivirus program - Scan computer and delete all detected threats.
Hope it will helps, if so do rate the solution
Good Luck

have a virus on my toshiba laptop, can i resolve this by restoring the factory settings?

Hi Andrewfairwa.

Yes, you may remove all the security threats in the Computer by restoring it to the Factory settings.

But, restoring the Computer to the Factory settings will also delete the Data in the Hard Drive.

Hence, you may try performing a Complete System Scan to check for any Virus or security threats.

You may perform the Complete System Scan by using the Anti-virus Application installed in the Computer.

If you have not installed any Anti-virus Application installed in the Computer, you may perform a online System Scan.

Let me provide the detailed steps to perform the online System Scan.

You may perform the free Online Scan by visiting the below link:

http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html

Please open the above link and click on "Start Scanner".

This will start the free Online System Scan.

Once the Scan is complete, check if the Virus or any security threats are removed from the Computer.

If there are still any threats, then you may backup all the important Data and restore the Computer to the Factory settings.

Hope this helps.

Please feel free to ask further questions.
