The simplest check you can do on a laptop that wont turn on is to remove the battery and try again with just the power lead.
If the laptop will turn on OK then you have a faulty battery that is causing the failure. This is not a test that will fix all dead laptops but it is a great starting point if this works then all you need do is order a new battery these are about £20-£50 depending upon make and model.
