Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to install a new graphics driver (ATi and NVidia)

Uodating your graphics drivers is very important. It can fix bugs in the software, prevent your PC from crashing, or increase performance in 3d appications like videogames. Here's a howto:

1. GPU-Z
Firstly, you should find out what graphics card you have. If you know alread, skip this step:
Download GPU-Z (http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/) and run it. No installation needed. The program should show your graphics card model and driver version:
2. Downloading the driver
There are 2 paths from here. If you have a GeForce card, read steps B from now, if your card is Radeon, read A's. (If there's no A or B, the step goes for both)
A. Go to http://www.amd.com/uk/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx, fill in your info in the "download drivers" box to the right, and click go. Download the latest version of the "Full package" drivers. Save those on your PC. (If, of course, the driver version on the site is the same as the one GPU-Z shows, you already have the latest version installed!)
B. go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and fill in your info. Download the latest driver version and save it on your PC. (If, of course, the driver version on the site is the same as the one GPU-Z shows, you already have the latest version installed!)
3. DriverSweeper
Download a tool called DriverSweeper:(http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-%28Setup%29-download-1655.html)
and install it. DON'T use it yet. DriverSweeper is a useful tool that lets you delete remnants of drivers, which are not deleted by the official installers, that will cause your PC to be unstable, maybe even crash.
4 Uninstalling the driver.
A. (ATi) Open the driver program you just downloaded, but click UNinstall first. Deinstall the drivers from the default location, then shut down the PC.
B. (NVidia) Go to Windows Control Panel, go to the menu where you can uninstall programs (it's different for every Windows version, so I can't be specific) and deinstall the "NVidia GeForce Driver" program. (may also be called by a slightly different name) Shut down your PC afterward.
5. DriverSweeper 2
Restart the PC, and hit F8 BEFORE Windows starts loading. A menu should appear. Choose "Boot in Safe Mode". The PC will start and the screen will be in a very low resolution. (everything is very large and blurry) If not, you were too late and need to try again. Then, start DriverSweeper.
You should either select ATi - Display or Nvidia - Display in DriverSweeper:

Then hit analyze, and then clean. After that restart the PC
7 After restarting, you screen should still be in a low resolution. Now, open the driver you downloaded, click install and wait for the installation to finish. After that, restart your PC and you're done!

I don't quite follow the problem but, you have a low end card and maybe the game is too demanding for it. Are you having problems with crashing? Have you updated your driver? You can update the driver here:
Product Type-GeForce
Product Series- GeForce 5 FX series
Product-GeForce FX 5500
Choose your operating system, language and click search.
You will want to uninstall previos driverbefore downloding new.

Black screen during gaming default graphics settings, no overclocking forced to hard restart..only remedy is to use rivatuner to force 3d performance..at the cost performance during gaming. Gateway p-7805u Did reformat, installed new OS, cleaned fans, applyed a superior thermal paste, had the gpu reflowed..issue persists.

I've had a similar problem on my Dell Studio laptop. Windows Update will force an update to the graphics card driver, and the result will be full of bugs. To fix, consult the graphics card's manufacturer website (Intel, nVidia, AMD) and download the correct driver for your graphics card. Uninstall the current driver using Device Manager (Windows Vista/7 just type in "Device Manager" to the start menu search. Expand the Display Adapters section. Right click on your graphics card and select uninstall.) You should then be prompted to restart your computer, do so. Once your computer has rebooted, install the new driver downloaded from the manufacturer's website, after it installs you should again be prompted to restart, do so. Once rebooted, problem should be solved.

If I helped you, please give me a 4 thumbs up rating. If you still need more assistance, comment back and I'll be happy to continue helping.
