Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Change The Default Location For Installing Apps

As the size of hardrives increase, more people are using partitions to seperate and store groups of files.
XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit)and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default, this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.

What's your problem?

Hi Shel,
On which partition is the Operating System installed?Drive D?
Unless you re-install the Operating System again,Am sorry you can't change the size of the partitions.
Your only option I think is to delete old and unnecessary files from drive C.
Is your anti-virus installed in partition C?If so,you may delete the backup it stores of quarantined files. This is how to:-
  • Disable the anti-virus first.
  • Go to program files on C.
  • Double click on your anti-virus name from the list of files.
  • Double click on backup.
  • Highlight all of the files and press delete.
Hope this helps.Thanks!

what is the difference between ntfs & fat

This are the difference between the two.

File Allocation Table (FAT): A file system used by MS-DOS and other Windows-based operating systems to organize and manage files. The file allocation table (FAT) is a data structure that Windows creates when you format a volume by using the FAT or FAT32 file systems. Windows stores information about each file in the FAT so that it can retrieve the file later.

NTFS: An advanced file system that provides performance, security, reliability, and advanced features that are not found in any version of FAT. For example, NTFS guarantees volume consistency by using standard transaction logging and recovery techniques. If a system fails, NTFS uses its log file and checkpoint information to restore the consistency of the file system. In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, NTFS also provides advanced features such as file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression.

how do i edit and store midi files on my tyros keyboard.

Storing is easy... editing is NOT so easy and is better done using a PC with an editing program.

Not knowing which model Tyros you have, either bring the MIDI files on floppy disk or USB stick.

Select the floppy or the USB source on the Tyros while in the song mode. Find and COPY a file or files, then move back to the place you want to store them like hardrive or user space and PASTE. You can create folders before each to keep the things seperate.
