Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Automatically create an Update Virus Defintions CD for Norton Ghost v12.0 and v14.0

Got Symantec GHOST12 (bootable CD) + NAV2008 (non-Bootable) with a valid serial number and want a method to scan your PC for Virus with the latest Virus Defintions but you don't have NAV2008 installed because your ISP gived you a free Virus Suite then read on.

I have created this semi-automatic method to create a virus CD that will work with the Scan for Virus option on the Ghost Boot CD simply replace the Ghost CD with the one this creates and select browse usually for D: drive you will see your CD-ROM access light action as the Ghost loaded on Ram disk updates itself.

Download link for the Norton Ghost definitions Updater is HERE you need to join my group on facebook @windowstipsclub.com to request the password to unzip as this was originally posted there first, though you FixYa's might like it too plus there are other great tips and tricks. The download link for my Norton AV2008 definitions install CD is HERE on my rapidshare due to a 50MB upload limit on my Sky Drive.

You may also need to enable Windows Scripting Hosts do this using THIS from my Sky Drive to enable the VBS script to run at the start of both autoupdaters.

CreateUpdateVirusCD.bat - Will download the latest i32 definitions file and then action the full unzip ISO and burn in one go if you already have the ISO created then you can run the file below. first it will allow you to run a vbs script to clean then temp files Ihave found this to be required on some systems before the downloadsucks in the latest i32 definition file from the FTP server it willthen unzip it and create a Update Locator Virus Definition folder on your desktop similar to the UPDTLCTR.EXE function that is bundled with the Ghost CD (this only works if you have NAV2008 pre-installed and can't create the folder otherwise)

makecd4defs32.bat - will create an ISO from the Desktop Folder and burn the CD for you using mkisofs.exe and parts of the CYGWIN dll's this will burn the ISO to your CD/DVD burner it is set to default scsibus1 (dev=1,0,0) if your burner is on a different channel then you can run scanbus note the number and edit the listmem32.awk by altering the numbers shown in bold and saving the changes, if your drive is on scscibus2 then change to 2,0,0 and so on...

print "cdrecord speed=0 -dev=1,0,0 -dao -v Virusdef.iso" >> "dumpit.bat"

In the case of this scanbus the CDRW is located on scsibus1 but connected at 1,1,0 so change the line to read.

print "cdrecord speed=0 -dev=1,1,0 -dao -v Virusdef.iso" >> "dumpit.bat"

Norton Ghost v12.0 ( includes defintions no later than 2007)
Norton Ghost v14.0 ( includes defintions no later than 2008)

At time of posting the latest intelligent updater defintions file is 20091202-006-i32.exe which includes definitions not later than 2/12/2009 this can now be used in conjunction with your Bootable Ghost CD to give your PC an up-to-date scan using the latest protection

Last note you will have to create the desktop file if you have not tried to run the original update file from the Ghost CD otherwise the script will fail feel free to add these line to the script if you wish that is if you can get the mkdir command to create the Update Locator Virus Defintions folder.

my laptop has several viruses and cant connect to internet to download anti-virus software

First you need to remove virus from your laptop.
A safe way to remove virus is to use a bootable antivirus CD (containing the latest definitions) to scan the drive. Alternatively, you can attach the drive to a friend's computer that has an antivirus installed (with the latest updates) and perform a full disk scan.

Hello,
Thanks for using Fixya,

You can increase the ram .

I think your computer affected with serios virus ,or you have install unnessery software ,so please
un install un nessaery software and scan with f secure bootable cd .

Try to clean the virus Download bootable f-secure,bootable cd or http://www.techmixer.com/free-f-secure-rescue-bootable-cd-to-clean-virus-and-malware/> And burn the iso file ,under image burning option withany nero(major user take it wrong and burn under data option ,and it cannotboot from cd) and boot from cd at the start time. Go for bios setupand boot from cd (If you don't have any concept)
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/articles/bios/ Don't use kav rescue cd , because it will delete yourwindows file.

Hope this helps.

troojan virus affected how to remove

You could use "System Restore" to revert to the time when your computer is still in good condition or pressing F8 while still booting up and choose "Last known good configuration" at the selection prompt. Then use your default anti-virus after the repair. You could try to use a bootable CD to scan your computer. This is the best way to remove virus because the virus is still in inactive state when you boot to a CD. When you are booting to a CD you must change the booting sequence in your BIOS. You can download and burn Hiren's bootable CD and use the NTFS DOS to CHKDSK your hard drive or use the built-in mini-Windows XP and invoke CHKDSK at its DOS prompt. Hiren also has an anti-virus software on its collection. You could also download and burn a known good bootable anti-virus such as Kaspersky, Dr. Web, Avira, AVG, etc. and scan your computer.
