Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

SSID info

An SSID is a 'name' that you give to a router. This is handy when you live or work in a place that has many wifi "hot spots" and you want to know which one is for your machine. You can name it your last name and people in the area will know it is yours. You can also setup security on it to keep unwelcomed jumpers from stealing your internet signal. See my tip on wireless security.

When I try to connect to certain Wi-Fi spots at at certain coffe shops or places where they say they have free Wi Fi and no password required it asks me for a Device Ownership Password. I can't use it unless I get this number. Seems nobody else in the place has an issue but me

I have too (a fresh new) Dell Latitude E6500 and I have found a solution. It is very simple! Just create a new Profile:
1. in System Tray click on WiFi icon,
2. select 'Configure WiFi'
3. open 'Profiles...'
4. choose 'Add...'
5. in 'Profile Name:' type anything (it can be the same name as SSID)
6. in 'WiFi Networks Name (SSID):' type a proper name of your WiFi SSID
7. choose 'Operating Mode:' you have 2 options, but I rather choosed Network (Internet)
8. click 'Next'
9. leave selected 'Personal Security'
10. under 'Security Settings' choose WEP encryption type that is enabled on ADSL router. On my router I have WPA-PSK, and I have choosed WPA-Personal (TKIP). Type of encryption usually has different names, and be careful in choosing of properly encryption type.
11. type Encryption key in field 'Password'
12. click OK
13. select this new profile and click 'Connect'

HP C4180 Wireless printer lost network connection

You were probably piggy-backing on someone else's router, and they changed names, passwords, etc. But if you have a cell phone and internet access with that cell phone, you can set such a cell phone up as a hot spot (sharing internet connection)! The cell phone will tell you the SSID #, as well as the password which you will have to enter into the HP printer to let it connect.
