Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to setup Wireless security

So, you got a new wifi router and you can get online wirelessly, but you worry about your upstairs neighbor or the guy in the other building hopping onto your high-dollar internet connection and surfing who-knows-where without paying you a nickel. Here is how you put the brakes on that.
1. you must hard wire at least one of your computers into PORT 1 on the router. Login to that router (contact mfr for login details).
2. once logged in, select "Wireless security" (it might be called something slightly different, but essentially, it is the place where you activate a security key for the wifi signal).
3. Choose the style of encryption that you feel is best. A good general encryption is 64 bit WEP (13 digit Hexidecimal) setting. This setting works with wireless B and higher. If you are ONLY going to use wireless G, then 128 bit (26 digit hex) is stronger. You can also choose WPA, but I seem to have better luck with WEP.
4. you will be asked to choose a passphrase or keyword. something like "scoobydoo" or "goldilocks" or something familiar, like your first car "Oldsmobile" or "Cutlass" or the name of your long lost love, first born childs middle name. Any of those, but PLEASE remember it! this password will become encrypted into a 13 or 26 digit HEX key. Also, it may or may NOT matter, but in case it DOES matter, use all lower case letters when creating the phrase. Do NoT mIx ThEm lIkE tHis, or add !?><@& or any other special characters to it. make it a word that has meaning to you.
5. WRITE DOWN THE WORD and keep it in a wallet or safe place. The key will be generated. you can COPY and PASTE the key in a text (notepad) file along with the passphrase/keyword and save it in your main pc's my documents folder, or print it out and keep in your wallet/purse.
6. you will now APPLY this key and all your wifi computers will drop offline. Go to each one and input the keyphrase or the hexidecimal code (whichever it asks you for) and they will rejoin your wifi. If you want your friends to party at your place, they will need that wireless key as well.
7 Dont panic. if you mess up, press the RESET button on the router, and repeat.

I have a wireless router and my broadband provider is talk talk but when I am upstairs the signal is fair and sometimes no connection .Can you help please? Thx

May be simply out of its signal range blocked by the building construction such as brick walls. WiFi uses wireless radio transmission, so is restricted to how much it it can send and receive like a normal radio. Obstructions absorb the power over greater distance, therefore you may need to relocate the device closer to where you need the signal to be strong

depending on your location - check with others to see who they use, then either call them or go online to check availability, pricing and sometimes you can even order online! I have AT&T Uverse and if you go to ATT dot com- then go to SHOP tab, you can see availability by your address and order internet - TV- and even phone service. It will also show different pricing according to the speed of internet. You want faster if you watch videos and movies online. You also may have a Cable company in your area, where I live it is Cox Cable and Time Warner Cable companies. So you may have to search online or ask neighbors who they use and go from there and find their website to call them or order online. At&t I ordered, then got the Wireless Wifi router box so can hook up main computer and use your laptop or other devices with it wirelessly. so keep that in mind when ordering also - my neighbor doesn't have any laptop or any other stuff so he was happy to get a Wired router, with No wireless wifi connection

need help using router

First of all your neighbor must be able to reach your signal. When they start up their wireless application they must be able to see your SSID, and have enough signal strength to actually connect and do meaningful work. This might be the case already, or you may need to put in a repeater closer to your neighbor. You r neighbor could also purchase an external directional wifi antenna from radio shack to improve reception. I have used Cantennas (look like a Pringles Can) before and they work ok.

Once you have signal then you just need to give your neighbor the password to your wifi network for them to enter into their network application. This password was setup when you setup the wireless network. You probably wrote it down, or it is a common password that you use.

The rest should be seemless, depending on the signal strength.

Go and buy a router. Plug your existing modem into the WAN port and your computers into the LAN port. You could even get a wireless router and connect your upstairs computer wireless. Be sure to lock down your SSID (Wireless Access Point Broadcast Name) so your neighbors or people driving by don't get on and do bad things on your network.
